Differeances are: front calipers, steering bearings, cam chain tensioner, metal breather tube on the middle case, kick start gears, somting with the cam or top end oiling, better oil pick up for off camber riding, rear brake linkage, swing arm ( because of the brake linkage), bearing carrier, rims, guesset on frame on the left motor mount where they crack (I'd like others to check their '86's and see if theirs has it, mine does), 86 had helmet holder, tool box, color plastic, seat, I think somthing with the grab bar, clutch cable routing, rear sprocket and bolts, dial on the rezzy is gold '86 black '85, black top tripple clamp on the '86, lower clamp has a plastic thing over the steering stops?
Just cause they are different doesn't mean they won't swap between the years either.

So if I put a 86 swinger on my 85 I'll need the rear brakes off a 86 also. are the carriers themselves the same? any difference in shock mount locations.

i think that the 85 brake will fit, but the internals are probably what was changed

I'm not sure, but I think its just the rear brake linkage thats different, the '85 has a torque bar thing and the '86 has a little stud on the swing arm that the bracket that the caliper bolts to goes around, so when the brakes are applied the bracket hits the stud and keeps the brakes from going around your axle. Actually there is a bushing on the stud to take up the space. The carriers have a different adjustment on them, the '86 is similar to aftermarket carriers, it has like 2 holes I guess in it, you just stick a allen wrench in the hole and rotate it, the '85 is a spanner.
Not sure about the shock mount, my guess is that its the same.

I'd like to find out for sure. I just bought a whole rear setup thats off a 86 to use on my 85. not including rear brakes.

Are you going to try it and see if it works or wait for a reply where someone is certain? Another posibility is the person just said it was a '86 when actually its a '85. If it has a threaded stud on the brake side of the swing arm its '85, if it has a short stud, no threads with a small groove in it its '86. Got any pics of it?

I'm taking the 86 swinger to a buddy who's going to extend it 4 inches and keeping my 85 swinger for trail riding. I just need parts that interchange easly. I may try to find another 86 swinger and sell the 85 I have. Tom sent me the price breakdown of the parts he's changed out and I'm considering getting a durablue axle and a double bearing carrier. If I can sneak it in under the visa radar.

The 85/86 swingarm/brakes are not interchangable you will need a complete 86 brake setup for 86 swing arm and visa versa

85 has more parts to the bracket and uses a tourqe arm/86 has sliding bracket...no differance in performance but i have found the 86 bracket has a tendency to bend...oh and in referance to your original question as to differances thire are over 42 differances but most are minor i posted a complete list here before mayby somebody saved it cuz im not gonna type it again
