i think the only difference is the 88-89 are a long rod motor, and use a different stlye intake casting.as far as i know everything els different is really minor, and mainly changed in between 85-86

the 89's are supposed to have the best clutch setup out of them all.

the later model motors are just missing the top rear engine boss.you know how the atc has 2 bolts back there by the swinger?well the later trx use a solid swinger.you can still use it,you will just have an extra engine bolt laying around

i don't know honestly.never had enough seat time on a 89 motor to know the difference.i like my combo though.i put the 88-89 rod in my 85 motor, with a esr spacer plate.you could always got that route.buy a new 88-89 hot rods crank, the 88-89 cylinder, and through it on your motor.would be the same thing really!

my old motor is well bad off.the clutch arm leeks out the top.need new clutches.drane pluge is stripped.the trans needs new bearing and seals.of corse the case saver bolts r busted. needs new top end soon.jb weld on the cases.well any ways the last owner bet it up pritty good.so i think it time to get a new one it alot less money to get a motor off ebay than fix the one i got.pluse i got alot of goody for it pt pipe /38 air striker/boyen reeds and a few others
