View Full Version : Cheap street legal bikes?
Dammit!

Since I live in the middle of the concrete desert, I'm considering maybe picking up a bike. Either a street legal dirtbike or a real street bike. Cruiser, crotch rocket, doesn't really matter. The only thing that matters is price. I don't follow the bike scene much anymore so give me some models to keep an eye out for that are good buys (and good bikes obviously).
I see the Suzuki Katanas usually around $2500 on craisglist. That's actually a little more than I want to spend but that's probably about as good a price as one would find on that type of bike. I'd like to stay under 2 grand and don't want anything older than early 90's.
I had a 1991 Suzuki DR350 a long time ago. Didn't like it much. Just felt very underpowered to me for any real off road use. I had fun buzzing around on the streets with it though which is all I'm really looking for right now. I'd possibly pick up another one if the price was right. I see them around here all the time.

do not get a katana, they have good motors but power sucks so bad and they are way to heavy. if you want a cheap sportbike with the most bang for your buck get a old fzr600, most times you can get somthing around 96-99 for 1500 bucks if not less. i have one and its great, alot more power the a katana and alot easyer to throw around in the corners then a YZF600r.
the katana is oil cooled and the fzr600 is water cooled making about 70bhp.....its not much. honda cbr600's f2' and f3's are good but will cost more, suzuki gsxr600 srads from 97-00 go for about $2000-2500, the same for any ninja 600cc....stay away from the ZX6 they were just to heavy.
heres a pic of my old 1997 yamaha fzr600 sportbike, maybe you'll like it, i get 60mpg on it but i am 120lbs dressed in full gear too.
hope i helped.

last year i was in the same spot as your in, i wanted to buy a bike but i didnt want to spend a lot on one being my first bike, i almost bought a cruiser but i couldnt let myself do that, then one day i was driving bye a small town and seen a yamaha fz 750 and really nice shape for 1500 and had 14000 miles on it, i drove it and liked it so i picked her up, its kinda old looking but gets me around good and i get like 40 mpg with it, it has decent power, nothing like a R1 or anything but it goes preety good, i have a pic under my name u can look at

I am in the same boat but I am looking at older bikes like the early 80's NightHawk and the like. My brother had one and I ride it and fell in love, then he sold it to a guy for $500, I was soooooo pissed. Now that is the bike that I am looking for. I had a 97 CBR 600F3, it had great power and was as comfortable as anything I have ever ridden. I just want on to ride around while I am off of work. Two weeks is alot of time off and nothing would be better for me than to just hop on and ride up to TN or over to Cali.

sold my rz-350 last year, recently picked up a 2002 ktm 200 exc.
just for your info, almost all ktm exc's come with a street legal title. add dot tires, blinkers and horn and you have a street legal dirt bike.
