Ive got a pos Gateway with Win-doze XP and out of the blue, the volume stopped working. I click on the Volume Control and it says "There are no active mixer devices available. To instal mixer devices, go to Control Panel, Click printers and other hardware, then click add hardware".

Well, I went to Control panel and dont see anything that says "printers and other hardware". The closest thing is "printers and faxes".

The volume was working fine a couple days ago. I havent touched it lately, so I dont know what could cause this(other than this computer being a flaming piece of plastic garbage.)

Any ideas? TIA~

Can you do a system restore to when it was working? It just might fix it.

Try the restore first, but also Gateways are known to "loosing" drivers. The good thing is you can still get online. So you should be able to go and download the latest drivers that are compatible with your system.

I would run a disk check before the restore. It might be able to fix the problem. It's true the divers can sometimes vanish. Do you have a speaker icon in your system tray?

Hi,
Right click on My computer on the desk top, left click Manage and look on the left for Device Manager.
Left click,is there a yellow triangle with an exclamation point?
There should be one on Sound, video game controllers toward the bottom.
If so right click, click Scan for hardware changes and then restart, that should fix it.
If not do all this again and this time left click properties and check sound driver by right clicking each one and click update the software, then restart again.

Ok, I did exactally that and rebooted. Everything is fine now! I dont see how though. When I right clicked each driver and selected update software, it said that there was no update better than what I have installed...for each driver! Oh well, its good now. Ill know what to do next time...and Im sure it will happen again too.
Thanks everyone! :beer
