Does anyone have any ideas on where to find one of these kits for the 85 250sx?

many SXs were taken back when they recalled them so you may already have it. An easy fix is to get an '86 or '87 carb or put a larger pilot jet in. The cold start kits are discontinued I believe so its very hard to find one. there was one on ebay about 1 year ago to give you an idea.
Does it even have trouble starting in the cold?

You should still be able to get the kit from the dealer or service honda. The part number is # 06161-HA0-305. I believe my dealer might have one or 2 of them if you are interested and cant find one.

Scott, do you think you could get a larger, clearer copy of that service bulletin? I made my own "cold start kit" from a micro filch i had, i did all the tubing, but i didnt see anything that went inside the bowl, looks like something about a machine screw? I cant quite read it.

the machine screw is just the larger jet correct? you can see it in the center of the parts pic

The tubing doesn't do much more than combine a bunch of vents. You'll need a larger starter jet which is ONLY in that kit. You have the option of drilling yours out a couple of number drill sizes larger than stock but you'll have to be certain to get all the chips out. The kit is about 60$ and I thought discontinued. The 86/87 have a threaded in starter jet not the press in 1985 style. A 86/87 250SX or 350X fixes the problem. Or buy my 1985 carb with the kit installed :)

Can you just swap out the 1985 carb and put in a 86 or 87 without a lot of hassle?

Yes you can use any of those carbs with no mods.

I just went to my local ATV salvage yard and found an 86 or 87 carb. You'll know the difference when you see all the tubes on it. It made 100% difference this winter. Even when it was sub zero - the old SX would fire right up.
Swap out those old 85 carbs for 86 and 87 carbs! no hassle just replace the old one and you are golden!

Thanks for all the info, and offers for help. I am going to do a little digging and see if I can find a 86 or 87 carb or buy a 85 that already has kit installed.

Hey Sagers, heres how I found mine (which is the one pictured earlier in the thread). Do a internet lookup of all the Honda dealers in your area and start calling them, give them the part number, they'll say its discontinued.... ask them if they have one on their shelf... I called a half dozen dealers in "cold country" (Wisconsin/Minnesota) and found one that had it. I paid with a credit card and he shipped it to me with the installation instructions....btw the instructions do not come with the kit. They are on a bulletin which he copied out of the book for me and mailed with the kit.
Good luck!

Logged on to Honda.com and searched all availible honda atv dealers from Buffalo, NY to Caribou, Maine. I needed to find 2 cold start kits. I ended up finding four kits. I called just over 30 dealers. The 5th one had two kits in stock. They had been a dealer from 69' on to present. The owner said he could not remember ever installing one on an SX. He originally told me he did not have what i needed. 10 minutes later my cell was ringing and he said he had found to on a shelf of old atc parts. It does pay to call dealers!

My dealer said they could get the kit in about a week time frame if I ordered it. They are costing around 63.48$ for the kit (I believe). Not sure how many they still have but apparently they have enough.

I was told by 15 plus dealers that they were discontinued. They got this info via honda. I asked if it was discontinued at every dealer i called. I got one dealer in vermont to sell me 2 kits for the price of one. He had never installed one in 35 yrs. He had two and told me they retailed for $50 +. I found one in new hampshire and one in maine. Like i said i took a whole afternoon and called about everything in the northeast

Don't let this good stuff get away. The shop owner is probably going
"I never sell any of that stuff, might as well pitch it all"
