from our sister site.... 250sx max speed 50.1

Man some of those are kinda hard to believe, 7mph from the 85-86 Tri-Z? Only thing they changed (speed wise) was the gearing and the 85 isn't geared that much lower...
Bryan Raffa
04-01-2007, 03:24 PM
easy on the Tri-z billy it will go faster than 7mph:(

85's have 5 speed 86's are 6,that's why they have more top end!
Billy Golightly
04-01-2007, 03:58 PM
yes I'm aware there was an "extra" gear in 86, but in reality the 5th and 6th gears in the transmissions are actually geared fairly closely. That, coupled with the effect that even if there was a substantial gear change I don't believe there was enough change in engine power to pull it...

To those that don't know, he's talking about the electric-powered Tamiya Tri-Z r/c kit.

call me skeptical, but 55 for a 185s, and 50.1 from a 250sx? If the honda line spedos are correct, my friends 22 year old, non rebuilt, absolute stock, 85 250es, geared lower than the 250sx, does 54-55, flat ground, oem tires. Id like to know how these numbers were achieved, from honda? from hondaline spedos? from the ol "well i was following my buddy in his truck..." radar gun? gps?

no way my 85 tecate does anywhere near 78 maybe 60 and its top notch, a 110 tops at 40, i know this for SURE--- i ride a brand new dual purpose bike to ride beside them!!

185s 55? damm LOL

Yes, the 185s WILL do 55 mph, 82'185s has one that will top out at 57 wot on a straight stretch.
One of my friends had several old skool 250r's. He claims he got one up to 81 mph about a quarter mile before it blew up. I dont think it was that much, but I do have the cylinder out of the trike. The head studs were ripped clean out of the cylinder when the head shot off. No threads left down there. This guy puts everything at wot and then some and I can swear hes gone beyond some of those top speeds listed.
The only one I wouldnt agree on is the 110, I could see a 125 hitting 48 but no way could a 110 do 48.

wow... pretty impressive... if i had to guess i would say my 85 350x would be at 65ish... but i guess on a proper tune with a skinny rider it just might do that. Wow :D

83-85 200x is right. I rode beside a car for about a half mile at 59 topped out.

I've owned about 10 of those machines listed, some showroom new. There's several numbers that are high in the original listing. Some by as much as
7-8, or even 10 mph.
dirt bike dan,
If your '85 Tecate will only pull 60, it's either geared down a good bit, or it's definitely not top notch. They won't do 78 stock, but I know they'll do more than 60.

Ha....Maybe I shoulda posted the link here instead of this vs. that last nite.....LOL:naughty:
I didn't think it would be such a hit:D
For what it's worth......when my 86 R was still fresh and stock, other than a DG pipe, it would top out in the 70 mph neighborhood on hardpack.

This was on a thread on 3wheeler.org posted by MR. ATC. This should end the mass confusion in earlier posts. Radar and GPS are the only way to accurately measure speed...
"the end all list... TOP SPEED of "my" trike
here is a list of the "aproximate" Average top speed of the majority of the most popular 3Wheeled ATV's. this list is based on severall criteria including magazine articals and test, manufactures "claimed" top speed, ( before lawsuits the manufactures were not afraid to post top speed in there spec sheets), and personall experiance using such equpiment as radar guns, atv mounted factory aproved and tested speedometers, side by side riding with comparable ( i.e. XL on-off road m/c's) by riding on flat paved sufaces on distance's of over two miles. (how fast your buddy, the cops, or whoever had to accelerate to to catch up to you on your trike is not the same).

Those speeds are outrageous...completely false! The 84/85 Tecate tops at 70 in stock form.

I was thinking 45 for the 185s and 55 for the 200x.

i had a 78 atc 90 with stock gearing and stock motor go 40mph on the road ( followed by a car) and this was with 18'' tires ....so 48mph seems right on for a 110

Anyone still have the '85 200X exhaust shootout article? It was either DW, 3Wheeling or 3&4WA, I can't remember which.
Using a radar gun, they were getting low to mid 50 mph readings. If memory serves me, I believe stock was like 52mph.

i dunno man the gearing is stock, and it really is top notch it just seems to have a close ratio gearbox, im sure itd pull 75 no prob w different sprockets though!!:beer

If your more than the average rider of #165 most 200x's won't pull past 50.

I have never trusted bike speedos, but the 50.1 SX speed was mine clocked with GPS at 2200' above sea level....

I have since broken that run at 54.6 (with GPS at 6500') mind you I was on flat ground but the run was nearly 2 miles long and I was speed tucking like a mofo! oh, and I was running 22" tires as seen in the picture below

Those numbers are pie in the sky or the gearing was altered/motors modded. There is no way an old atc110 will go 48
Dirt wheels magazine did a test with a bunch of sport quads almost 20 years ago at the drag strip, they used a radar gun. The only machines that were in the high 70's were the banshee and LT500R. The 250cc two strokes were high 60's low 70ish . They threw in a kawasaki Mojave and I believe it did 54 or 55
That 250sx would probably do 55 with the correct rear tires on it

Yeah I think those are bogus numbers. My 85 250R is fresh rebuild, stock gearing and stock tire size and its all bottom end. It probably does 55 tops.

Not trying to flame or anything, but there must be something wrong with your R. My '83 200 with stock tires and gearing, topped out at 56 over a 1-1/2 mile paved stretch. I have also personally seen an '82 185 top out at 57, also stock tires and gearing. Both machines were hauling arse with the throttle pinned.
Remember guys - those numbers on that list were obtained on pavement, over a 2 mile stretch, and no mercy to the throttle. They probably blew the motor on some machines getting those numbers too.

We used my unlces older truck back in the day and that thing would top ( the speedo at least) at 85 and my dad's tecate and my R ( before I owned it) were right on him too

I think the only way to settle this debate is for somebody to test all of the trikes listed with a GPS. I can tell you right now that my friends 200s probably didnt top past 45, so Id think we definitely need either a radar or gps to settle this. Hehe, if youre really interested, take your bike out on the street and find one of those signs that tell you how fast you're going. Just make sure there arent any cops around! :D

Haha well with our trikes the cops may be interested to know why we are doing this.. Testing ancient history sir lol
Dammit!

I'd trust radar more than GPS. I don't trust anything my GPS tells me anymore. I think I need to send it back for some calibration or something. It'll tell me a waypoint I have marked is to my right when I can clearly still see the location to my left.

I have ran my 250R (85) to 76 mph with GPS and a ratio of 12/39. I know with the stock ratio I was at at least 80

85 tri-z is under a 350x? I don't know about that one?
Just last week I was on a stock 85 350x. Riding with a stock mint 85 z and a 700cc 4 wheel coffee table. we got out on the highway for about a mile or two to get the the trails and they completely left me I was topped out and they continued to pull away. Granted the 350x had 20 inch tires and stock gearing but it wasn't even close. To keep up topped out I would have needed 30 inch tires or another gear or two. I think the Z is faster topped out than what is listed.

Thats funny. I think eventually all the trikes listed for top speed, will show up at trike fest and we will know the answer. Any bike is faster then my tecate. And it is no where stock.

Well I don't hold it wide open for like 6 seconds max at a time. There is not a thing wrong with my engine. Engines cost too much to rebuild. Seems like my power is all bottom end also. So maybe it will do 70-75 but not willing to toast the engine. BTW- no offense taken! :)

everyone of those top speeds..for those atc's...are off. 110's running 48! Nope!! I had one...top speed was 35 +/-.....
They are all a bit slower than the #'s posted.

My old 110 topped out at around 35 or a little more.
200x im not real sure but im guessing somewhere around 60. It has 15/38 gearing, 20'' tires and exhaust system.
Oh and my craftsman tractor with 27'' super swampers tops out at 7 mph. Stock is 5.4 I think.
