I have a eMachines computer, about 3 years old my sister gave me. It won't turn on. Press the button---Nothing happens, like its not getting power. I wanted to know what are the first things to look for or some possible problems that I can try to find. I don't know very much about computers or electronics. I've made sure its plugged in and I've taken the cover off and didn't find any loose wires or connections. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
It has a Intel Celeron 2.0ghz
128mb ram
40gb hard drive
cd burner
dvd rom

ok my fathers e-machine did this. it turned out to be the power supply. i would get a new power supply. it could also be the power switch or the motherboard isnt grounded well enough.

hmmmmmmm ok, thanks. I'll check the switch and look for the ground. Then I'll buy a new power supply.

Nope the problem is its an emachine sorry. I can tell you right now that its one of 3 things garunteed there are 1. Power supply(most likely the cause they are notoriously crappy) 1. Motherboard(My pap had an emachine it was two years old and took the power supply and processor with it and a second processor when i tried another one in it) 3. Processor (doubt it but possible). Flip the switch on the power supply then hit the power button see if the fan turns at all and go from there. if it doesn't time to try another one thats known to be good.

Does it matter what kind of power supply I get or will anyone work. I sometimes find junk computers at the local dump here maybe I could jack one. I found one there a while back that had a pentium 4 processor 256mb ram and other stuff but it didn't have a hard drive. I didn't need it then so I got rid of it.

not smart on letting that find pass and you need an ATX power supply with a 20 pin mainboard connection

but it will need to fit into the case. e machines are smaller than custom pcs. ive built and fixed plentty of them and icp sounds like he knows. make sure you buy the physically smallest you can. you may need to mod the case.

your best bet is to do like i did and build a new computer instead of messing with broken ones. i built a custom computer with everything off new egg but the monitor for $250 there is great deals on there and my computer is very capable.

You will have to buy the same model. Power supplies are the number one part that goes bad in any PC, no matter what brand. Hard drives are a close second.

I ordered a new Power Supply and in a little over 24 hours after I ordered it, it was on my door step. Talk about quick shipping. Newegg takes the cake. I bought a $20.00 one that had good reviews. I put it in and it works great. Turns on and everything works good. The only problem is the holes don't line up to screw it to the case. So its just kind of sitting in there. Thanks for the help. I couldn't have done it without you guys.:w00t:

Try flipping it over and the holes should line up. you may have to lift up on it though. If you live out of cali it would have taken longer but yes newegg is by far the best computer superstore i have ever had the pleasure of using.
