now im running out of possibly causes to my trike not starting, and one of the last ones on my list is that the engine is just in too bad a shape to run. yes i know that its not the whole engine, but it most likely isnt worth it to fix everything individualy when i can just get a new engine. but what should i get? i dont want to spend over a grand, unless theres a must have engine for 1000+. now i know a 500cc engine would never fit, and its not what the bigred was built for anyway. what engine would give the most power, and would fit with the least amount of modification? hopefully i will not need a new engine, and that stephens carb will solve the trikes problems, but it would be nice to know what to look for and how much to save up just incase

you'd be surprised how tough these old honda motors are? have you cleaned the carb? checked for spark? does it backfire? Smoke? not start at all?

IMO you'd be better off rebuilding the original honda motor than trying to stuff something else in there.

Maybe if you supply us with some more info we can help you get it running properly.

well, i have tried alot, it gets spark, it even ran a couple times for like 5 seconds, im getting a new 22mm carb from stephen, im hopin that does the trick, it backfires when i let of the gas while tring to start it, but if the carb doesnt do the trick the only other thing i can think of would be timing before it gets to the big stuff like hole in the piston, bad o rings, and other problems with the engine that i am not firmiliar with fixing and i would have to take the bike to a shop to fix, i guess instead of a new engine i could improve and fix what i have, i jus want a little bit more power, im not saying i want a bigredR or a 84 bigred 250x i just want that extra 'umph' if ya know what i mean

you can probably garuntee that it is the carb and or timing. and get a cam form and 200X and a bottom end from a 200X them have it ported polished and bored 60 over. alot cheaper and more power.

that sounds like a good idea, if that carb dosent do the trick thats my next set of steps, even if the carb does work, i might do that anyway eventually jus for the extra power

you could probably even put a stroke kit in it or what ever but i heard the motors crap out faster. and the only thing with the bottom end is that you lose the high low range selector. I want the 200X stuff on mine but if i lose that range selector i lose my stump pullin abiltiys, i found that i have that today when a chevy with 4 wheel drive locked in with a 350 V-8 could not pull a stump in my front yard while he was on pavement, so i unhooked the chain from the truck put it on my 200M with a 200E big red engine and pulled it out in about 10 seconds. that is way i'm not so sure about the swap for me but it realy depends on how you ride and where you ride/what the trike is used for.

oh ya i forgot about that, i would like a fast trike, but losing the hi/lo defeats what the bigred is, i think ill jsut go with basic modifications, and if that isnt good enough ill try and find a 250r

TRR hit it; because it is shaft drive your options are limited. There aren't any "drop in" engines for the 200es, anything other then another 200es motor will need fabrication for it to work.

You don't happen to go up near Syracuse over the summer do you? I will be home in about 3 weeks and could help get your trike going for you. I am in Chittenango NY which mapquest says is about 3.5 hours from Wallkill. I might be able to make it down to your area but I don't know when. Just a thought if you still need help in a few weeks.

Well I would say that the engine is fine but there is something that needs replacing. You will need to just got thru each part eliminating everything one by one. I bought a big red that was in the field for 7 years sitting. I was able to take it home, change fluids, tank, carb and it started right up. So dont get discouraged, just try each part. Good luck.

hey, before you do anything else, adjust the valves.

that would be cool if we could work something out, i might be heading up to saranac lake this summer which if i remeber corrctly isnt to far from your location, i would try to adjust the valves but i do not have the proper tools at the moment, i could always rent parts from autozone as trr has said, or if i wait 3 years boces gives graduates a 1000 piec snap on tool set:w00t: , that would be awsome

a set of feeler gauges aren't that much money at all. $4-$7 at most auto stores.. you'll need them and a 10 mm socket or wrench. Oh and a 17mm to turn the flywheel over.

I think most smaller cc honda's are around .oo4 for both intake and exhaust.

i have a ton of sockets and wrentches, ill have to pick up feeler gagues though, hopefully as i have said alot the carb will solve everything, but there is always that chance it wont
