Hey everyone, my dad just bought a 1993 Ford Ranger XL 4 by 4 reg cab with a 4 cylinder, 2.3? It already has a 4 inch lift and nice tires and rims... i was just wondering if dual exhaust would be a good idea, like sound good? or would it sound horrible... i don't know much about this, i love the sound of it on v8's and v6's and was told it would sound like a civic lmao... is this true? please get back to me... thx!

Please don't. V8's sound good with the right exhaust. V6's almost always sound awful with dual exhaust. 4 bangers sound terrible.

Everyone needs to stop lieing about duals on a 4 cylinder. I have a 87 Ford thunder bird turbo coupe With the 2.3L and IHI turbo. My exhaust sounds great. IT DOES NOT SOUND LIKE A RICER. In fact it has a muscle sound to it. It is not true duels. it is a split after the cat. ALL TURBO COUPES AND COUGAR XR7'S ARE THIS WAY. I have seen the same setup on rangers before and it sounds great go for it. just make sure you use 2 1/2 inch piping for the whole thing or even 3 inch before the split. BTW nice ranger. it just needs some real tires on it. lol like 33"s

To tell ya the truth oldsking, i'm not a ford guy. I'm a trike guy. lol but really I just know it sounds good from my car and i like small pickups for off roading. and I HATE mustangs overrated crap is all they are. I did like the one generation when they were small with the round headlights i think it was early 70's. any way josh the question is whos doing it? shop will run you a few hundred more than doing it your self. the cost really depends on your local prices and regulations.

i hear them all the time and honestly they dont sound that good. i would just run a single out behind the right rear tire, put a nice tip on it (not huge either, maybe 3in), and put a good PERFORMANCE muffler on it, not something to make it loud but something for a few extra ponies while keeping it quiet. maybe a 40 series or something

ok, i'm only 16 lol i don't knowm uch about it, i just hear it on a lot of trucks and love it! , i just want it to sound deep? not like a dumb civic or something... i've heard it's gunna sound horrible, but i've heard if you do it right it will sound great!

I forgot to mention that I have performance mufflers and no catalytic converter. Has a nice low rumble to it.

eventualyl get a crate engine from ford racing, ooooh how about a 302 smallblock  that might fit, too bad its like 8000 bucks
on second though 4x4 + pickup truck + transmission = maybe u should jus stick with the exaust

I would suggest a single beefy exhaust that exits before the rear axle. you will benifit more from a single exhaust with your NA 4 banger. I understand icp is running duals, and claims it sounds beefy, you must also understand he has a turbo, there is a lot more flow there.
To much flow is not a good thing. A single coming out under the bed will give you that extra little rumble your looking for.

Don't put duals on a 4banger. They sound like crap, I here them all day, every day.

I would like one for my thunder bird, but i would go buy an old blown up one and build it up myself. screw paying 6 more grand than it cost to make because it says ford racing.

you could always go to a junk yard and get a thunderbird or couger or mustang SVO head with turbo setup and slap it in your ranger. and yes the turbo will make a big difference in exhaust sound.

right now the exhaust exits the right side right before rear wheel, i'll keep looking into it... i don't need a v8 or v6 right now cause gas expensive haha... so i'll just stick to exhaust and maybe a nice stereo.

my brother put a flowmaster 3 inch exhaust on his 4 banger 95 jeep yj and it sounded as good as any 8 ive herd. dont get me wrong i like the sound of a 8 but i like the sound of a 4 that sounds as good as the 8 and costs allot less to fuel that sound. man do what you want its your truck but im sayn put dual on it. ive seen it done and it sounds nice. just dont get a crappy exhaust system.

The only way your going to get duals to sound good, and be cool on a 2.3, is to get a flowmaster like 84honda200s said, but get single in, dual out, then all you do is run pipe from there out. Nice ranger though, my brother has a 1994 for ranger, ext. cab and he is going to do a 5.oL (302) engine swap when he can get some money to do it.

Dont put duals on a 4banger. I've heard 'em and they suck. It will take a lot of money and time to figure out a system that will sound good.
Just stick with a cat-back system from Magnaflow

I agree. Dont do it. I know a guy did duals with no cat or muff and it sounded lite a squirrel farting

slightly off topic: depending on how long your willing to wait im planing on swapping the engine in my mustang in about 3-4 years lol its a 5.0 (302 small block)

One of my friends put a flowmaster exhaust on his 4 banger nissan and it sounds like a bee in a glass jar. I have a magnaflow cat with 2.5" inch pipe and a 40 series flowmaster single in and dual out dumped off on my 3.0 Ranger and it sounds pretty good but it's pretty loud. What it sounds like is mainly depending on what setup you have it can sound good or like s*** the only way to find out is by trying what you want and not by listening to our opinions.

to me most 4 bangers sound the same with exhausts, most sound like a ricer, but hey its a 4 banger, your not gonna get it to sound like a v-8, id run a single 2 1/2 with a 40 series or something like that

update lol, ok so my dad tells me it's a 4 cylinder, but apparently it's a v6... so i wonder how many litres? oh well, maybe dual exhaust or something would sound good on it as it is a v6, sorry for any confusion.
if its a 4.0 your in luck they sound sick with dual exhaust!! flowmaster 2chambers! all the way! if its the old 3.8 v6 they sound alittle high strung with dual exhaust

It is most likely a 3.oL you have there im guessing with the size of the truck. I got my brother to look over this post, and he looked at that truck and told me that the 4x4's like that dont come with a 2.3, but have a V6, so he said it is most likely a 3.oL. he has a 3.ol and he is running the same a Yamaha 225. From the headers he has it connected to a Y-pipe, which leads to a 40 series single in, single out, if you just leave the end of the muffler, with nothing coming off the end for a tailpipe and such, it is loud, and it sounds real nice, it is so deep it sound like a small V8.

"V"baaa, you want a deep "growl" then drop a 5.9cummins in it and let it breath with a 4" straight exaust. :)
