How many gun owning members own/enjoy military style rifles or carbines, and what's your favorites?

For me, my fav has to be FAL syle rifles for their accuracy, power, and reliability...though they are a bit heavy.

A close second would have to(shockingly) be AK pattern rifles for their ruggedness, reliabilty, and ease of handling.

Honorable mention goes to the old warhorse M1 Garand(30/06 8-shot stripper clip fed) and the M1-A(.308 box fed).

I own a few. Have owned many others.

One that I have now is a PTR-91 (HK clone) .308 16" barrel. I am really enjoying it more than the FAL's I have owned.

A few weeks ago I got to shoot a real M-14, select fire. It was sweet!

I've just sold a 16" HK clone myself. It was an older Century with a Federal Arms aluminum reciever. It was actually much nicer and worked much better than most Century guns you come across.

A 16" 7.62x51 is LOUD....but I'm sure I don't have to tell you that:)

I have a WW2 Arisaka type99 rifle, 7.7mm jap. Great hunting rifle. Very accurate. 5 shot stripper clip. Not a fast rate of fire but based on the very tried and true mauser action. This rifle is very powerful and I can see why it was very hated by the US Marines. The shot sound itself is very distinctive.

I just bought a yugoslavian sks a little while ago, its got the gernade launcher on it also, overall its preety fun to shoot and shells are so cheap for it, not real fast or super accurate, but its not bad either

Yugo 8mm mauser, weighs a ton but ammo is dirt cheap and it's a blast to shoot. Of course the SKS, I have several from back in the 90's when I had my gun shop and could buy them 5 at a time for 45.00. I have 1 set up for deer hunting, ballistically it's equal to the 30-30. Then my personal favorite, M1 .30 carbine paratrooper model. Lite, fast and plenty potent round.

SKS is a great gun for the money. I've had at least one in the house since the early 90's when you could pick them up for $80 or so all day long.

Here lately I've started paying attention to the WWI & WWII era bolt action military rifles. I never restore those either. I like looking at the dings and scratches imagining the history that may behind each one.

I've kept and hunted with reproduction 19th Century military rifles and carbines too. Talk about a really slow rate of fire!! I've had repro 1858 2-band Enfields in .577, a repro 1859 Sharps Cavalry carbine in .54 cal., and was having a repro swivel-ramrod Enfield saddle carbine made by the only guy that does them, but he quit before he started mine due to health reasons.

BTW, reenacting mounted Confederate Cavalry for years is how the 19th Century stuff became a passion.

What are your thoughts on the new 'Assault Sporting Rifles' now sold at Gander Mountain. Some like them, but I think they feel cheap. Everything was loose on them like they were put together in 5 minutes. I think they leave much to be desired. I like these puppys here, do they count? Its an FN P90.

Hmmm..... might have to think.... WWII .30 carbine and M1 Garand, 93 Mauser 7mm, 98 Mauser 7mm, 98 Mauser 8mm, Egyptian Hakim Semi in 8mm Mauser, Arisaka 6.5 Jap, Arisaka 7.7 Jap sporterized and rechambered for 30.06, Chinese SKS, Polytech M14 clone.

If I needed one for its original intended purpose, the M14 would be my first choice. Other than for collector nastalgia, and a very fun toy, the most useless would have to be the .30 carbine. These were designed for officers who could not shoot a pistol, and its debateable as to whether the round equals the .22 rimfire in overall performance, but its a blast to shoot. I took it rabbit hunting once, but never hit one. It might make a good squirrel gun. The Hakim is the weirdest semi auto action I have ever seen, very interesting. They are all fun to shoot, and I dont have anything bad to say about any of them.

I don't have any military style rifles, but I've shoot a few.
I got to burn up about 500 rounds on a tri podded .50 cal machine gun.
Tried to melt the barrel, but couldn't. Thanks Uncle Sam it was a blast let me tell you.
Used to shoot a mounted M240 machine gun (308) on my tank.
Would an 120mm tank round count from an M1A1?
M-16 and M-4, but didn't like them to much. Alway zeroing it so the darn thing
will shoot right. Think that's why the AK is the worlds favorit. It will alway shoot and go where you want it.

So you can still get 8mm ammo? My mother inlaw has an 8mm mauser sniper rifle
her dad got from the war. I don't know how he got it but he did. Still has the scope and blood stains on it. I'm really wanting to shoot this thing guess I'll have to find the ammo some place. I'd like to have it ,but I have a bother inlaw says it would be a cold day in hell. So it's pretty much his when she passes. Which I can understand.

I am retired Army Infantry. I stick with the 9mm handguns and 5.56mm rifles, because that insures a readily available supply of ammunition. The M4 I own is a real pleasure. I have used them for decades and never had a problem with the design. The big plus for me is those decades of experience that make carring the M4 as natural as putting on a pair of comfortable sneakers. To address the issue of having to re-zero the M4, get your own. The ones in the arms room are likely to be used by others, who will zero the rifle to themselves. It shouldn't happen but it does, all the time.

I, also, have a couple of Ruger 10/22's for small game and training the young ones. The P85 and M4 are my 'Liberty Teeth'.

8mm mauser ammo is cheap and plentiful, the last time I bought some, I paid 5.99 for a bandolier of 70 rounds on 5 round stripper clips. Granted it was made in the 1930s, but still shoots fine. just go to J&G guns.com or AIM surplus for ammo, you can get it ordered on line. jim

I like the Armalite AR15's .223 is super accurate and pretty cheap. Throw a retractable stock on that bad boy and then its some fun shootin. Also a fan of the SKS they are cheap and are Especially fun it you put a Dragunov Style stock on to one. They are pretty nice to look at after you put some goodies on them, also makes them look like you spent some money on it when you only got like 500 in it. As for a military style pistol you cant beat the old 1911's.:w00t:

I second the 1911 for an auto handgun with some history. Never owned one, but will one day.

For handguns I've owned:

-Ruger P-85 9mm
-Beretta 92FS 9mm
-(2)Ruger P-90 DC's in .45 ACP
-Glock 22 in .40
-Glock 29 in 10mm (my favorite auto caliber)
-(2) Ruger 4 3/4" bbl Vaqueros in .45 LC (favorite pistol caliber overall)
-Ruger Vaquero Bird's Head in .45 LC
-various imported Colt SAA 5 1/2" clones in .45 LC
-various cap and ball revolvers(Cavalry reenactor for you:)

I've yet to own a Colt pattern rifle or carbine, or anything in .223, but I've seen a Bushmaster I'd like to own. I hear from several owners that they're real sweet shooting guns.

I went to buy a beautiful Yugo folding stock AK awhile back for $550 with all the accessories, but ended up coming home with another Federal Arms receivered HK 91 clone with a 16" bbl.

I guess after my FAL experience, I'm stuck on the 7.62x51 caliber guns. Downside is the weight compared to an AR pattern gun, SKS, or AK variant. Oh well.....Specter 3-point tactical slings and all's well.

Man, I love this site! Where else can you go and get three wheeler info, llinks to websites that sell Jart parts, and then stumble across a thread on guns!

I'm an avid shooter/reloader, pretty fond of the AR style rifles, and .45 Gov. style autoloaders (0.452 = big hole!)..... Although anything military floats my boat.

By the soundsof thenumbers you are posting up, guns are so cheap there. Uphere, a lee enfield would run you no less than $150.00 for a hunk of junk. Max range of 100 yards for accuracy but would still bring down a big bullmoose. I wouldn't mind getting one for those rainy and wet snowy daysin the bush. Something you could just throw around and let it get wet. But i favour accuracy, so my brownings come out to play but just get cleaned thoroughly before going to bed.

A lot of times you'll hear people talking about something and you know it's B.S. or they did this or that or knew someone that you know is a lie.

Well anyway, my name here on the board is Bigbore. Most of you might think I took that name because I like big cc motors... Not really. It started almost 15 years ago with big guns. I've owned a lot of different kinds of "Assault Weapons". I got a FFL in '90 and had a lot of money and did gun shows. I've had a HK21 belt feed semi-auto .308, HK 91's 94's, SP89's, Uzi's standard, mini and micro, Mac 10's,11's, and a .380 Mac 12. I've had a Striker 12, USAS 12, and a SPAS 15. I've had most AR-15's and AR-10's (never an original OLD Armilite AR10), an unfired AK Bullpup serial no. 23 of 500 made and imported. Most Polytech and norinco AK's ( I liked the Yugo .308 heavy the best of the AK's), I've had Galil's both in AR and ARM configurations in .223 and .308. I had a FAL that I didn't like very well, and I've had a lot of others. I like the AR-15 and AR-10 platforms the best. I've had a Maddi Griffin .50 BMG. I also made 2 .50 cal rifles at the shop because I could. In the early 90's up until '98 I made a lot of gun parts, mostly for the AR's. Got a couple of magazine articles, filed for a few patents, and help designing stuff for the military.

In '94 the Desert Eagle .50AE had just come out. I though it would be cool to shoot this round from a rifle. So I worked on a conversion to fire the .50AE out of the AR. Olympic Arms already had a conversion for AR's to shoot 9mm, .45ACP, and a couple others. I wanted to build the most powerful AR out there. I took a while to get everything right, the barrel twist, land and groove diameters, magazines to feed reliably, extractors and bolts, etc. Within 6 months I had the design down. We started making and selling the conversions to the public for $549. Within a year I had sold 250 conversions. A couple of smaller magazines had approached me; they wanted to do an article on the conversions. I sent them the AR-50AE conversions. Machine Gun News (now Small Arms Review) wanted to know if it would run on a Full-Auto M-16 lower. I told them that I didn't know but that I would send one out so they could see. They did thier article and it would run full auto but you could only hold the switch down for 3 to 4 round burst before it would push you over.

In total I made 550-.50AE conversions for the AR. Some went to law enforcement, some to the military, but most went to guys that wanted the biggest punch out of the AR-15.

Anyways after the magazine article came out the Military Proving Grounds in Aberdeen contacted me. They wanted me to send them a conversion so they could play with it. They had a unique idea but couldn't get their idea to work so they ask for my help. They wanted to use the 50AE conversion and use a sabot from .50 to .223. Why! They wanted a versatile weapon so it could be used for lethal and non-lethal roles. In one mode the .50 top end could fire the sabot at high pressure where the sabot would be thrown free of the .223 projectile and have a velocity of at least 2,300 fps. At low pressure the sabot was to remain encased around the .223 projectiles and the velocities wee to be at or below 550 fps. The larger diameter and lower velocities would keep the projectile from penetrating soft tissue. The project was dubbed V.V.R.S. (Variable Velocity Rifle System). The design had to be adaptive in the field and had to do so by rotating the handguard and opening up and bleeding pressure. They couldn’t make their designed work so we helped developed a system that would.

There are others that will tell you they were the first to make the conversion, Tromax, Thunder Mountain Armory, Dolphin, Hesse, and Beowulf. But they weren’t! I have the dates on the magazine articles. The Beowulf was a copy of a design I made to have Starline Brass make a 50AE cartridge with a further rebated rim to the size of a 7.62x39. I was going to use Colt 7.62x 39 bolts. I had decided not to and someone else 8 years later picked up the idea and started it.

I like to play a little to, so I made the AK 2/47 Weapons system. I made 180 of these. I used to go to the Solider of Fortune Conventions in Las Vegas. One time Peter Kolclais (chief Editor for Solider of Fortune Magazine) was walking around the shown and came up to my booth. He had a big grin on his face when he saw the AK 2/47. He had asked who made them. I told him I did. He looked for another minute or tow and them told me to report to a meeting room at right after set up. I wasn't sure what for? After set-up I went where I was told to report and there was a whole room full of people. When I came in, Peter Koclais said you’re the guy with the guy with the gatlin gun, I said yes. He said he I'd like you to do the "Live-Fire Demo" the next day. I said ok. I didn't know what to expect, I hadn't ever done something like that before. They told me that I was going to be second on the list and not to be late! We went to the demo, Pissed off some other guys that had been around for a lot longer and that had been in the business, namely Jonathan Ciener, the guy that makes .22 conversions for the 1911, and other guns. He pulled up in a red Ferrari with a 6' blonde with him (he’s only like 5'5" tall). He comes up to me and says he needs to be next and he’s Jonathan Ciener! I looked at the guy that was running the demo and he said “No! That I was second on the line”. Ciener got pissed off, jumped back into his car and screamed out of the dirt parking lot. I took 4 – 100 round drum magazines with me. I loaded each gun with a 100 round drum, loaded and fired taking a few aiming shots. Each gun fires twice with one revolution of the crank wheel. I was firing on a car about 200 yards down range. Then I opened up! Blew through the rest of the rounds in the drum. The guns were smoking. Everyone at the demo was yelling. I loaded the guns again with the other two drums. This time I went through the 200 rounds in less than 10 seconds. The guns were crackling from the heat. Everyone loved the “totally legal” AK 2/47. After we got back to the show, within 2 hours we had sold all 20 units that we had brought. A couple of month’s later Machine Guns news called and wanted to do an article on the unit. They came down to the shop to pick one up. When they got there we had just finished putting together a QUAD (not a 4 wheeler!). Anyways you’ll see it in one of the photos.

I meet a lot of people in the business, been involved with some guns that were on the Discovery Channel “Guns of the Commando’s” and made a lot of other parts. I made conversion in other calibers, made the PSG-1 style grips for the AR’s before ERGO was even in business. Sold products through DPMS and Bushmaster. I was making AR Polygon rifled barrels that I was getting from Walther in Germany. I got a patent filed for a Titanium Hammer for the AR’s that will be on the market in 6 moths or so. Helped with a friends project (M2 Corporation in Las Vegas) a 6” barreled AR that has complete reliability and was sold as an under the jacket personal defense weapon to the Aimer of Kutar’s security force of 250.

There a lot of other things and projects that I worked on or built for other people in the firearms business. Some of you might think that I’m BS’ing you, you might see the name American Firearms and say “right!”. How do you know its me… On the American Survival Guide’s article It has my name on the first page of the article and Billy can confirm that through my registration here.

Have a look at some of the stuff I've made.

I've got a lot of scanned images, sorry for the usage (i'll reduce the best I can and will delete any when ever you need Billy.

Heres some more on the AK 2/47.

The photo's are my wife and I at the SOF convention. Look over my right shoulder and you'll see one of the .50 cal. rifles that I made sitting on the tripod. Its a take-down rifle, the barrel comes out and the stock comes off. Fits real nice in a pack that I had made for it. It has a bi-pod mount that will take a M-60 bi-pod or can mount to M-3 tri-pod. It was a fun little rifle. It had an 18 barrel and weighed 16 lbs. What a muzzle flash! I built a lot of shorty uppers for other people including Shorty AR-15 in .50AE.

e-Dog, That's a mosin Nagant M44. I Did a PU scope mount and bought a custom turned down bolt and ring pull saftey/decocker (looks like a swiss k31). That thing is a monster! The k31 is one that I will also acquire when i run across the right one in walnut. Lately i have been enthralled with the kalashnikovs. I believe i want a yugo fixed stock or underfolder. For a while I couldn't stop buying different mags for my AK. My Tri-Moto project has cooled that obsession for the time being.
