my step dad has a 1984 200x just like mine. he just rebuilt the top end everything is new. new bore, new piston, new rings, cam, cam bearings, timing chain. valves are set at .002 and still makes sounds like valve noise. is this normal for these engines to sound like this? my 1984 200x makes the same noise that sounds like valve noise. any help would be appreciated. thanks

my 200s with a 200x top end did that. it ended up being either the bottom cam chain sprocket or the cam chain adjustment. i really couldnt pin point it because i replaced both cam sprockets and replaced the tensioner.

every thing in the top end is new except the cam gears but it sounds like the valves aren't set properly but according to the shop manual it says .002 so they are set correct any help???? thanks

on top of the engine case just below the carb area.there is a bolt and nut.with the engine running lossen that bolt just a little. That should automatically adjust the cam chain and quite it down some.I had to do that to my 84 200x quite often.

no the cam chain should be tight everything in the top end is 100% new

I thought the valves were supposed to be set at .003? Was everything tightened down to spec?

Did you replace the rockers? The part that rides on the cam should be smooth and rounded (no flat spots on it).

It seems like you changed every part in there. Something must be out of spec inside there. Are the cam journals and the head surface they ride in - in spec?
How about the piece that attaches to the cam on the left side. Isn't that the pulse generator with some kind of advancing mechanism on it? Maybe thats worn out?

I hate to say it , but if you want it silent and OEM sounding then your gonna have to tear it down again and measure and check every single moving part.

i think its the cam journal it showed a little bit of wear. do you know if they make cam bearing inserts for it? it sounds like valve noise but its not

I'm not sure if you can turn the cam journal down and put a needle bearing in it or not...

Anything can be sleeved or repaired IF there is enough meat on the casting to allow it.

It may be easier to simply find another head thats in great shape, just be willing to pay 100$ or better for it. Any good machine shop work will run you about 75$ an hour and setup alone takes that long.
