View Full Version : Smith Road Raceway: Memorial day 2007 MX Races "ROLL CALL"

The first race of the season is coming up in 2 weeks. They run 3 a year.
This race is located in Medina, Ohio on an old 60's style motocross track. If you've never raced before, this is a perfect place to start. No huge jumps or technical sections. Just good old fashioned fun.
Last year we set the Ohio MX community on it's ear with 17 three-wheelers competing in 2 seperate classes. By far the largest trike turn-out in years.
If you don't race and just want to see what 3-wheeler MX looked like in it's hayday, make the trip out to watch. You won't be disappointed.
TimSr can help me out with the details, but I believe the gates open at 6:00am and practice starts at 8:00am. It usually costs $8 to park and another $20 to race.
I hope to see alot of new faces this year, as well as all the great competition that usually joins us.
So, Who's coming?

I believe gates open at 6am. Sign up begins at 7:00. "Big Quads" which includes trikes practice promptly from 8:00-8:15am. This is not like Sunset Ramblers. They are always right on schedule! This is the only opportunity you will have to practice, and you must already be signed up before you practice, so GET THERE EARLY! Mini's practice last but they usually let them play on the old peewee track until then.
Gate admission is $8.00. Racing is $20 for first class, and $15 for additional classes. Info # is 330-725-8569. To use internet map for directions, address is 6868 W. Smith Road, Medina, OH 44256.
Last time we had enough people for a "B" class for those with slower trikes, or those who just werent ready to tangle with the big dogs. I hope we can do it again.
Please give us a head count in this thread, and what class you would run if they have both an A and B class so I can let them know at signup. Also if you would like to run a 2nd Quad class, provided they are spaced apart, let me know too, so I can make the case before they schedule the running order. They have a Two Stroke quad class, a Senior Quad class, and a Blaster Quad class (200X). If you dont have race experience I strongly advise you to only run one class!
My sources tell me we will have lots of spectators coming specifically to watch the trike classes. Eyes are upon us, so we need to represent trike racing in a positive light! Lets put on the best show ever!

If i remember correctly, You guys had the BIG turnout on labor day? I want to try and make that one if it's still on the schedule. A nice end of summer old school race sounds like a good time. I'll probably get smoked but still sounds fun.

I'll be running A class, and either Senior Quad on the Z or 2 stroke Quad on the R.
Id suggest Two Stroke Quad class over Senior Quad. Both are really good riders, but Senior is mostly modern thumpers while 2 stroke is all oldschool quads.

About what time are the trike races? I won't be able to race since I won't have a trike out there and since I would have runa marathon two days before I will probably still be very sore but since I will be withing a couple of hours I might go and watch.
Derrick Adams

Race times vary according to where we fall in the line-up. Last fall they put us in early because so many people were there specifically to watch the trikes. Anywhere from 9:00am to 2:00pm.

Racing starts at 10:00 and they always run the mini classes (5 or 6 motos)first unless the track is muddy and they need to dry it out. Trikes are usually near the first class run after the mini classes. They typically have 25-35 total classes - bikes and quads, and they run each class twice, running the same order for the 2nd moto.

After the problems with the first two races I tried to make this year...I am PLANNING on making it to this one, but can't say 100% yes.
I should have the new 450 to run, but I am gonna try to get my T4 back together in time. My cylinder is STILL at the plater. I guess I could drag along one of the 350Xs and run it. AARRRRR!! B class with The Pirate!

Shelly & I are OUT! (booooooooooooooooo!!!) we are really tied up with personal affairs right now - no we are not cheating on each other - we have 1 million things going on and can not make it. We want lots of pictures though!
*****NOTE***** not making it to one race DOES NOT ENTITLE anyone to label us as "Armchair Racers". We'll make it to other races this year!
Have fun and be safe all!
PS - Shelly says hi and good luck to all of those racing on 3 wheels!

5 days to go people! Hope to see a few more people show up than have posted. I'm pretty sure we need more than 10 to have 2 classes. Tim could probably answer that.

Spent the day out in the garage working on the pair of 350Xs. Got one ready to roll to Smithroad. I took it out for a small ride and I think I may see if I can swap out some braking components.....these ones seem a bit soft.
What is the weather like out there in OH? Do they still run in the rain? You know me...I hate the mud, but I will race either way.
Derrick Adams
05-24-2007, 04:33 AM
Craig, there is a 30% chance of storms. That means there's a 70% chance of sun! MX is one sport thats run rain or shine. As long as there's no lightning, we're racin'.
EDIT: Just checked the forcast again. Now changed to 10% chance of rain and cloudy skys. High of 77 degrees.

Practice is promptly at 8:00am for big quads (adult quads and trikes) and you have to be signed up before practice so Id be there by 7:00 so youre not rushing around. Its nice to have time to unload, dress, fuel the machines and oil the chain, etc. Ill probably be there by around 6:30.

Just got home. It was a great day af racing. It's too bad alot of others could'nt make it. I ended up running the 200x under Craigs number in the 2nd. moto after he left. The blue 250r had some small problems after completion so it could'nt make it's debut.
I only have time to resize and post one pic for now. All I can say is sorry Derrick. The wife took it when no one was watching. LOL:crazy: :banned:

I had a great time and it was awesome to have 12 trikes lined up at the starting gate! Great to see the guys I havent seen in a while too! Its with great pride that I race with you guys at this track where theyve known me for years. A special surprise is re-meeting a guy who was racing there when I first started in 1998, who decided to come back when he heard the "rumor" that a bunch of trikes would be there. He and Flyin' Brian were already there when I first started. You guys have no idea the impact you have on the public. Its easy to preach to trike enthusiasts on a message board but you have all helped win over a large fan following of non-trike enthusiasts. That takes some real effort. Your achievements in the cause of presenting trike riding in a safe and responsible manner to the public, and winning their support is unmatched, and you should all be very proud of yourselves. Its not about how you ride, its about showing up and having fun, and i have the deepest respect for every one of you.
TimJr and I were the last to leave, and the place was almost empty. As we were loading, the track folks were wrapping things up. As Im loading up, I hear this, "hey, are you the 3 wheeler people?" I look up to see the track owner, George Seigler, walking over. He wanted to tell us how much he enjoyed having our group of 3 wheeler riders run his track, and how much he enjoyed watching them. I told him we enjoyed how well they treated us, and how we felt welcomed, as some tracks would not even let us ride. "Keep coming back and we'll take care of you" was his answer. George was the old guy on tractor, watering between runs. He is kind of a local legend here, a local MX star from the days when good bikes had a couple inches of suspension. He's well into his 70's now, and I last saw him race MX just a few years ago at the Medina Fair. You guys impressed a guy who is not easily impressed, and Im proud to be associated with you.

We had a great time also.Max,Kintore,Tim And Shelly, The Hall's,We missed you guys;) .I especially had fun trying to hold off Derrick Adams. We battled constant and he was really pushing me both motos.Seems like everyone finds someone to race against in these motos, which makes it fun:w00t:
Here are the last of the pics we have my mother took. She came out to watch us,and had a lot of fun.
were there heats/practices before the moto? how many laps was the moto? that really looks like a blast!

Only practice was first thing in the morning. All the quads and 3 wheelers ran at the same time. I put in 4 laps for practice, but there was plenty of time left if I had wanted to run more practice. Some of the guys were finishing up some odds and ends on their bikes, and didn't get to practice, but I guess they were already familiar with the layout so not really matter. 3 laps per moto.
