 Your probably sick of my tire threads by now but I don't stop asking till I actually buy a pair because you can never know too much so here is what is "bothering" me now .........

When a manufacture choses a rear tire for there production sport quad, I'm sure they choose a tire that gives a good balance of traction and sliding ability when it comes to choosing it for production.

I'm also sure you all know that the Honda 400EX and 450R are great handling machines, SO, why am I reading now and then that radial tires don't slide well towards the bias jobs when Honda puts them on machines that demand a lot of that type of riding?

I always thought the tread pattern and size of tire was more of a deciding factor for sliding then the radial design?

I'm referring to these 20X10X9 Ohstu 501's here, which is stock OEM on the 400EX and 450R. Did anyone ever try these or other radials ?

BTW, they (ones on L,) are 9X9 110 bolt pattern, so would fit on many Honda trikes.

HMMMmmmmm, just found this quote from Derrick Adams ..........

" If you really want a well performing tire that you can slide and get great forward traction, look at the stock 400ex rears. They're awesome on a trike!"

:D Sounds good to me :beer

That's exactly what I run on my 86R. I love them for general purpose riding. Dry dirt to grass to trails to mud to rocks, these tires have taken me thru it all and done a fine job. I can honestly say that I am happy with the choice. You just have to remember to rotate them periodically to keep from wearing one edge of the knobs down too far.

WOWZA, this thread makes me OHHHH, so happy !! :D :beer :D

I keep changing my mind but I think this set up can be had for a reasonable price ands it's great that they are rotational. Looks like they will self clean with mud quite good too?

Have a few pic's of your R showing the tire/wheels up good ? Run the exact set up I have showing above?

They are just 2 ply right? Sometimes a 2 ply can be as durable as a 4 or even a six, depends what the plies are constructed of I think?

Did Derrick recommend them to you ? > because i see in your profile you are freinds with him.

I ran my stock EX tires on my 250R and 350X when I had em. They ran good. I ride in the woods alot, and they were easy to break loose when needed.

From what Derrick says, they wear on the fast side, you(s) find that so on the type of terrian you ride on?

Mine are hardly worn at all and I even have to ride on asphalt to reach a few of my riding areas.

This Saturday, I will have had my EX for 5 years, and the stockers are still on it. I ran them alot on the X and R when I had them. I would say they have 40-50% left, and the last 2 years have been mainly asphault on back roads around here.

I put a set of MR501s on my 350X and I love them. IMHO one of the best sport trike knobbies out there. I went from a 13 to a 14 sprocket on the front to compensate for the reduction in tire size from 22" to 20" and never looked back.

I have them on my 200x and there a great tire. One side wobbles causing it to wear a little fast but the other tire is holding up great. They slide very well also

Thanks guys, not one negative comment, I don't know what IMHO means though?

How much ya pay, did ya get wheels and tires, just wheels or what?

Where did you get them at ?

I want the wheel/tire combo for sure.

my girlfriend has those on her 02 400ex but she needs a new set, i actually was bidding on those that you put up, they are about an hour from me. Servicehonda has the tires alone for like $54 or something like that.

I'm still trying to work out a deal with them but certainly don't need the fronts.

How about you, need the fronts?

If so maybe I could get the four and have the two fronts shipped to you, if we agree on a price?

I hear they puncture easily. I'd go after the six ply Trekkers instead of those.

I want Honda wheels though and this seems to be the best way to get brand new ones. I really think I'll get a Otshu tire/Honda wheel combo, slime both tires and hope they hold up.

I only ride once a month IF that, so they should last a long, looong time .

it is, several people here have bought some including me. Mine are on my 85 250r project so i have no idea how good they really are. I have heard they are a good tire but i havent got a chance to use them. They are factory blems with the name buffed off but that doesnt matter to me. They are just like they would be from denniskirk or something but they have titan buffed off of them so you dont know what kind they are. these arent the size i'd want but heres an auction for some 18's for 10 inch rims. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/18x11-10-10-18x11x10-NEW-ATV-TIRE-FAST-TREKKER_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43983QQihZ006QQ itemZ160121175363QQtcZphoto I got some 20x10x9's for my 85 R. Im really thinking about getting some for my girlfriends 400 because im broke

Thanks and that I did see but I don't want no 18's either. I'd still rather pay $150 or so and get the stock Honda 9X9 wheels with the 20X10X9 Ohstu's.

That is a good deal though and I could care less about the name not being on it too.

Maybe someone else will benifit form these post! :beer

I still have 20x11x9 inch tires on 9 inch steelies for trail tires if I need them. I'll post back here how much ground clearance I'll lose when I get them mounted.

Huffa if you get those stock 400ex wheels you will have to grind the little bump off your stock rear hubs that about a 1/4 inch toward the center from the wheel studs.

my 85 200x had a set of 88 250r stock wheels and tires( same thing all stock honda quad wheels have date stamped on them) and they were just riding on the bumps instead of sitting flat on the hub when tightened down. 83-85 200x's have same hubs as your 250r.

Great tip to know Jason, Thanks Big time! :beer

I may be buying a whole quad set if the guy just doesn't want to part with the rears, you interested in the brand new front tire/wheel assemblies for your quad R at all if the deal goes through?

jason85atc250r
05-27-2007, 09:52 PM
i'd be interested in just the rims. the stock front tires dont work that good.

Huffa when you get them at home the date is stamped on the wheel by the valve stem. it'll say something like 4 00 that means it'll be from probably a 2000 400ex

the rear ones i have on my 85 200x say 6 88 so they were from a 88 trx250r. the tires are like new

They, the whole set, are brand new taken off a 06 400EX and never used. What makes you think they are from a 2000

Did a 00 come with same tires as a 06? Honda went all those years using the same ones?

They did not sell on ebay, it was over with today, I'm waiting for the guy to reply back to me, he has a buy it now of 275 for the set, all four that is, sound fair?

jason85atc250r
05-27-2007, 10:13 PM
honda used those exact tires and wheels on 88-89 trx250r's and 98-07 400ex's

i was just saying about about the year being stamped and 2000 just as a example. if the add did not say what year you can find out that way by finding the stamped numbers. those will probably have around a late 05 or early 06 stamped date.

i personally would wait for a just a pair of back ones. there is always a bunch of 450r rear taleoff sets on ebay. wheels are the same tires are slitely different tread. ive seen a bunch of used 400ex stock wheels and tires on ebay with 1/2 to 3/4 tread for under $100

i think oldsckool83 wom a set for $50 something

Huffa

OK Gotcha.

I'm really picky and want brand new wheels and tires though and IF I go to TF (not sure at all yet) I don't want to wait around too long for a pair.

I should have started looking weeks ago already

douglas makes a wheel thats one step abose the red label ones

it's called the douglas ultimate wheel i think. it's a red label 3/16" thick model with the thick rolled edge like a stock wheel. you could order a new package deal with those if it's to much of a pain tofind good stock ones.

Huffa

Thanks for the suggestion, I will keep that in mind.

Beside the net, I just bought the newest dirt wheels, so I'll look thru that for these ultimate wheels you mention.
