Yes, that is an incredible find!! Those spacers you made look great too.... Where on earth did you find that rearend if I may ask?? I have 2 87 spares in next to new shape but not as nice as yours. Sadly, someday soon I'll be selling them. I love the SX but it just doesn't get my adrenalin going like the 350X does....

What exactly is the difference between 85 and the 86-87 rear ends? I have niticed on the 86-87's it looks like the rear drum is exposed more from the backside. And where does the water come from you are talking about on the 85? I have a 85 and have never experienced water intrusion that i am aware of. Please explain.

Steve, i bought it off a guy i met that lives locally. I seen him selling Allballs bearing kits on ebay. I contacted him and he asked if i would like to stop by and pick them up rather than ship. I rode over one day after work and low and behold there it sat with a bunch of other SX parts and two SX's in the garage. He had planned on building one good one out of two. Then ran out of interest. He bought the swinger off of a guy in ohio that cleaned out an old tech school out there. They were supposed donated to the school after they disassembled them. I bought it for $200 bucks. I also bought a motor with harldy any hours on it ready and running for $100 and two nice sx tanks for $50 bucks. I made out. I hear ya. I love the SX but I will be soon purchasing a nice 86 200x and 85 250r in a package deal. I will keep my sx its just all around good to have. Wish i had your MOTOR though!!!!

I'm willing to bet if you tear into your rearend you'll find the water intrusion. The 86 and up rear brake drum is internal and located behind that big cover you see. Honda has a nice seal where the hub meets that brake cover and it works very well.

The 85 drum itself was exposed and spun around all the outside environment as you tear down through the trail. It has a seal on theoutside of the drum backing plate that does not work well and wears out. UNLESS, it hasn't seen alot of water, sand and abuse. If you pull off your drum and it's nice and shiny inside with the zinc coating still showing, then you have a nice tight drum to backing plate assembly.

I have only found 1 good 1985 drum in all the SX's I've messed with over a 10 year span. Thats why Honda brake shoe linings fall off, they get corroded with water etc and eventually with the contamination and the heat from braking they fall off.

Thats why dirtcrasher is the man, quality info. After talking with DC indepth on the how to's to sealing the 85 swinger up tight i have yet to have any significant intrusion. But i do not see a whole lot of water. Avoid it like the plague actually. It is important to take apart the swinger and file all surfaces flat. I even took the extra effort to machine quad ring grooves in matting pieces to help seal out water.

Well that makes sense. At first i thought you were referring to water getting into the diff. And yes, i have had plenty of water and mud in my front, and rear drum for that matter. And have replaced both sets of shoes, and they were as you explained. Separated. Well, that i can deal with, water in my diff? Just changed fluid and it looked a bit dirty but nothing out of the ordinary. Dirtcrasher thanks for the usefull info. Keep it comin!
