OK guys I just got an 83 alt50 for my sons 7th bday and when I went to pick it up I wanted to here it run but when the guy pulled the recoil starter, the cord broke.  Me being too darn trusting sometimes I took his word that it would run (seeings it was recently rebuilt) with further investigation I found that;
1: carb bowl full of water.
2: crankcase shows no sign of water "thank the 3 wheeled spirit".
3: the oil tank was not hooked up.
So now what I did;
1: cleaned the carb completely,
2: put fresh oil in the case,
3: got a new plug and
4: went and got me some 32:1 premix.
now with the choke on I can get it to fire and run for 1-3 sec. then it dies, no choke no fire. Anybody got any helpful words of wisdom? preferably a little more helpful than the local suzuki shop that still insists that because its not in there computer that it was never produced.

Sounds like an air leak or misadjusted pilot jet. That or you may want take a compression check for us so you could rule out rings, reeds, etc.

Yea definitely go through the carb, and clean it out real good.
If it had water in the bowl, chances are there is a lot of corrosion in it.
Get some good carb cleaner and let it soak after removing any rubber and nylon parts. I would also remove the jets and pilot screw, and let them soak out of the carb. Let it soak a day, and then go through all the passages with compressed air.
Compression would be a good thing to check as well. If it runs at all, and has good resistance, compression probably is decent. It's always good to hook up a gauge and check though.

hey, every one of those I worked on had a plugged exhaust. pull it off, and be sure to check the exhaust port too.

Alright I went to go get a compression gauge but of corse ours here at work was broke so going down the list I completely torn down and cleaned the carb again, no luck. next I wanted to take the pipe off but it was way rusted so I soaked it w/wd-40 and let it set. About 3 hours or so I went back out to check it and for shnittzngiggles pull the start cord and it ran like a champ. So if I got this strait if it wont run spray it w/wd and she'll work, thanks for all the advice-Brock

Great that you got it running. I'm sure your son will love it. I'd still check that exhaust though. My sons trizinger ran great then all of a sudden I had to put about a month of work into it. Seems most 50-60cc pingers are always having plugged exhausts.
