Im confused now, coming from the engine the exaust header was RED hot, I did accidently drop some paint on it, but could that really make it run that hot in only 5-6min??!

Scared to ride it now, lol

Running way way way too lean. Check valves or adjust the carb! I thought mine got hot, but never bright red. I heard it happening on the newer 450s, but not 200xs.

could it be because of the paint and the fact i had the choke on?

have you put an after market exhaust on or taken off the airbox lid or anything that affects flow? IT IS WAY TO LEAN DO NOT RUN IT UNTIL FIXED OR YOU WILL DAMAGE IT!!!!!!!

Maybe running lean because of an air leak.

All I did was paint the engine and remove the exaust to paint that too...

There has to be some thing else.

Did you replace the copper crush washer between the head and the end of the exhaust? Or do anything diffrent from the way you had it before?

if it was night time and you have a rusted thin head pipe, then its prolly nothing to worry about. how does it run?

Where can I get one of those washers?

I was going to say the same thing, is the trike back firing when you let off the gas now? It is possible that air is entering into the exhaust, where the pipe meets the head, and you said you had the choke on (which means it wasn't lean) and the air was combining with the extra unburnt fuel, and burning inside your exhaust, making it hotter.

it's an exhaust gasket, and you can get them pretty much anywhere. you don't have one on there?

i never had the copper gasket on my 86 200x didnt even run an airfilter and it never blew up or ran hot. your head pipe might me plugged up and notlet it flow completely

i had my old 85 200x do this back in the late 80s

it was built pretty hard and i got the wise idea to run this nitro additive in it.

well i mixed it to the gas at like 3 times the right amount and my kerker pipe was glowing so hot i could see the gasses in the pipe!!

im sure it leaned it out and thats why it did it but just to be clear, it did not live long after that

my 200x with a cobra header and 350x rear suppertrapp doesn't do that. You are really lean or have an air leak. Either way DON'T RUN IT LIKE THAT.

Air filters are for sissies anyways. I also recommend mixing Havoline Racing Oil into the gas at a 100:1 ratio for premium performance. Glowing pipes are perfectly normal though and nothing to worry about!

Dude, 100:1 is super rich! 250:1 is more like it. Remember, less is more (engine wear).

You must like taking your carb off and cleaning after every few hours of riding then. :wondering

That gasket is about $2 at your local parts place. If you don't already have one put one in and see if this cures that problem. ;)

you guys are nuts, glowing head pipes aren't that off for night time riding(slightly glowing), but during the day time and with the choke on!!!!!!!!!!!! You need air filters if you want your motor to last . You need that gasket for the headpipe, I think it was closer to $5, if you bought one at a honda dealer, it crosses to a xr200 gasket.

Thats exactly what I have, the engine wasnt hot at all, and it ran like it always have. It was dark in the night, and that pipe has been rusted to be pretty thin. It did backfire a few times at half choke, but with it off, no backfiring and purred like a lion :naughty:

I just changed the pipe on my 200X, and I was pretty sure something goes in there, so I just used so fireproof caulking to form a gasket. It is ok for now, but I know I needed a donut or something. Just didn't get around to looking it up yet.

I mentioned it, because he said he removed the exhaust, so maybe he didn't put one in, and it is sucking air? I have seen that condition in real cars, and model planes.

I doubt he was running lean, as he said he was using the choke.

that plugs looks a little off. it looks like it is rich but the strap looks chalky. it should be a tan color.

Well the spark plug is about 21 years old. Its weird, when I have it on choke I hear a dinging noise, and when I have it off, it purrs like a kitty.l... loud kitty

wow 21 years!!!, time for a new plug, i go through a plug a week (which is not normal) you should be changing at least once a month, change it with your oil

as for the choke thats normal i belive. once the bike gets warm, i get more of a loss of power if i leave the choke up which is also normal

Could that be why the pipe heated? Also the pipe wont glow now that the paint burned off.

riverrat

Maybe it was just the paint that was glowing.....

I do think the carb is gummed now tho... whats good to clean with?

honda_atc200es

take the carb apart, get some carb cleaner and compressed air and your good to go, spray down the jets and stuff, if you do it right you can leave your jets in and not screw up your jetting, but if its rerally clogged take em out

riverrat

You can clean it yourself, or take it to a shop that has a carb cleaning machine. They dip the carb in a solution, and the machine vibrates the carb back and forth for a hour or so. You have to disassemble the carb either way.
