View Full Version : DG silencer?

Had a question about the DG silencers for my tri-z. Are they worth the money? I have a stock one on there and it seems to work fine, just wanted to know if a DG silencer is a good investment? Any noticable gain over stock? Also, probably going to keep the stock pipe for now but what is the limit on it? After what modifications should a DG pipe be considered? I have an open air filter and a Sprock head. Or is the stocker comparable to the DG? Just want to get this straight so I don't spend money where it's not needed :wondering

On a two-stroke, the silencer doesn't really do that much to "increase power", because it doesn't do much in the way of backpressure, the expansion chamber does that for you. A DG silencer will make your machine louder and more "race" sounding, which may be something important to you, and it will probably (not sure about the stock Tri-Z muffler) save weight. I know that the DG silencer for the Quadracer LT250 is less than half the weight of the stocker, so if you're trying to shave some weight off the machine, and everyone is, it might be worth the 60 bucks you'll probably shell out for it.

I think silencer length will make it if you have a higher top end or quicker acceleration. A DG silencer will also save weight.

What? Is that because it will "flow better" than the stock silencer?

that's what i was wondering, if it flowed any better. And are the DG pipes worth the money?

The dg silencer will save you a few pounds. The stock tri-z muffler is a tank. The DG silencer looks nice and sounds a little more stout in comparison to the stocker - just reuse your oem mounts. Now if you put a dg exp chamber on there, it will get much louder. Sounds kind of like a loud snare drum cause it is much thinner material. I like my DG system but its rusting to *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* real quick - thats my only complaint. When i open mine up it gets pretty loud, which i like on the trails.

I really don't know the conditions over there, but here all I use on my pipe is the turtle wax chrome cleaner. My trike was sitting outside for over 2 years and the pipe was fairly rusty. The chrome cleaner took it off after two or three applications. I am very impressed with it. Granted I have never taken it through water, but when I washed it, the water ran off like there was wax on it.

You say a DG expansion chamber makes the machine louder? Explain?

The stock silencer is big and has many emission controls inside and sound controls inside. It is sort of like running a cat converter on your trike rather than just running the muffler. You know what I mean?

Yea, but he was talking about the PIPE making it louder, not the silencer. I'm not stupid when it comes to this stuff, I have just never heard of the expansion chamber making a bike louder.

Your stock OEM silencer has a Krizzman style spark arrestor built in. Sound baffeling too. The DG will flow more air as it's a straight thru design. BUT.....IT HAS NO SPARK ARRESTOR. Slip a Sparky on the end to keep Johnny Law off your back. Not starting forest fires is a good thing.:)

The pipe will make it louder because it is built for maximum performance of the bike and that means no restrictions. If you open up your stock pipe, you will find it to be very restirctive

All i know is that there is a big difference from stock expansion with a DG silencer to the full DG system in noise level. The DG expansion chamber sounds more tingy, like a too smoke should. I attributed it to a thinner material, but what do i know, probably just more flow. The full stock tri-z system actually sounds a little wimpy to me.
yeah - no sparky on DGs if that is an issue in your area.

nobody around here to please but myself :) Wait, that didn't sound right, I mean, no smokey the bear chasing after me wanting to inspect for a spark arrestor
Anyways, other than the noise level, were there any noticable differences from switching to the DG pipe?

put a set of boyeson reeds and a dg pipe, it will open it up nicely. Should get a little more snap from the powerband - so stronger mid range.
Some people put the DGs down for performance, but thats the only option for Tri-Zs. At least there are options - right.
As for other brands, good luck finding a decent system. I look back at my old magazines and there were a ton of pipe manufacturers for the tri back in the day. Answer, DG, Phase five, CT, RPM, and the list goes on - where are they now?. Any NOS/nice shape ones these days on ebay are scarfed up by the high rollers.
anyways, show pics when you get your new system.

ok, so the dennis kirk website shows 2 dg pipes. The XTreme exhaust, and the 2 stroke racing exhaust. The xtreme has the nickel finish and the racing has the bare metal finish. Any difference between the two otherwise? I don't need the shiny finish, just the better of the two
