I have an '85 250ES Big Red that is currently running on 3 of the 4 brushes inside the starter, 1 brush broke completely in half and fell inside the starter which I cleaned out and the other 3 are pretty worn but are working for now.
Anyone know the cheapest place to get rebuild/repair kits that contain the bearings, brushes, seals & brush holder? This is a pic of what I need, this repair kit is $49.99

I just got a complete brand new starter from a 'certain popular auction site' with 12 months warranty for $67.95 plus shipping. Just remember before you order there's 2 versions. Apart from being 2 or 4 brush, (which if you're buying a complete starter doesn't really matter) there's also long and short shaft types.
Good luck, Rob.

You can get the brush plate w/ brushes for about $30 from www.Hyperparts.com . I just bought one for my 85 250sx.

I looked up parts by my atv make/model and the only starter parts it shows for the '85 250ES Big Reds are all 2 brush. I have 4 brushes inside my starter (only running on 3 right now) so why is it showing me all 2-brush parts? I have seen the 2 and 4 brush options on just about every site but I have 4 brushes inside the starter. 2 are mounted on the plate and 2 are coming from below the plate. In other words, if I bought a 2 brush plate that would work, but what do I do about the other 2 brushes that aren't mounted on the plate? I mean, it's starting on 3 brushes now since one broke to pieces....so can I get a new 2 brush plate and it will start with 2 brushes just fine?
If I can just ignore the other 2 brushes and get a new 2-brush plate that would be fine with me but since I counted 4 brushes inside my starter now I'm all backwards and confused.
Here's the 2-brush Mitsuba plate it says fits 85-87 Big Reds:

Ooer, this could be messy!
The size of the commutator segments are different on the armature. This means the brushes would be too wide and could possibly short circuit between windings. Also, but I could well be wrong, the current flow on the 2 brush is obviously 'in one side, out the other', but a 4 brush flows in from the side then out via top or bottom depending which way up it is. It may be worth trying to make a fourth brush.
I took a brush out of a car starter, and just filed it 'till it fitted. It lasted a little while but as you can see from my previous post I eventually bit the bullet and bought a new one. That should give you an idea of how good the repair was! Whatever you decide to do, it sure beats kicking the darn thing.

I just called the ebay vendor directly since their number was listed and they had overstock starters New for 39$
but I got my brush plate locally and did it the same day since the rest of the starter wasn;t too bad.
More frustrating than fun tho, with marginal bragging rights.
Next time I'll just get a starter.
