Hey...so i go to start my bike today after a couple months and she wont start....the elect. start works....it cranks...lights work...but no spark... :(
my first guess would be the ignition coil...i used an inline spark test and even did the "thumb test" to see if i get shocked....but still nothing...
if you have any idea of what this could be or if you have an ignition coil (if thats even the problem) plz leave a mssge, Thxx 3ww!

check the neutral reverse hookup if its not that it might be the coil for the spark plug

it still cranks over w/ the electric start, so i should still be getting spark while it cranks right? ....brb...going to go double check something....i remember the last time i went riding i would have trouble starting it because the neutral light wouldnt turn on....i'm not sure if it would crank and not start or not crank at all...
what do you mean neutral reverse hookup? the red switch on the rear brake?

no on the right lower side of the moter well on mine theres 2 wires that hook up to a spot that says n r i donno if the sx has them but i know the es does the red switch on the rear brake is for the reverse

Yup...i have those two wires and they will only stop the bike from cranking...they wer both connected and i still had no spark, idk :( :( :(
is it possible to test the ignition coil...or maybe something befor the ignition coil that is stopping my bike from getting spark?

Bypass the run start switch. Your manual will tell you which wires to connect together. The 85 250SX has a weak point in the wire harness right at the CDI (near the battery box) wiggle that connection around while you check for spark.
There are only a few things that could be wrong. You need a manual and a multimeter along with someone who knows how to use a meter. Guessing is a wast of time, money and only adds to the frustration....

test the ignition coil if its not that check all connections by the batt it might be a bad connection wire

i went out n' bought a multimeter and 'tested?' my ignition coil.....the 's r there because i'm not sure if i did it right wen i connect the two points on the top of the coil the needle goes off the chart...good thing? idk
wen i connect one of the pointes to the inside of the plug cap it goes to about 4 ohms wen set at RX1K.
...i guess this isn't my problem...
Errrr....idkk....
i'll check for a break in the wiring soon...

Depends how many ohms it's looking for. If it's pegging the needle then your probably on too low of a scale. You bought one of those 9.99$ meters didn't you? LOL, the digital meters are easier to use and read, which if you haven't dona allot of it can be tough to read what it's saying.
You had it seat at 1000 ohms, or any resistance up to 1000 it should read. When a needle pegs you are on too low of a scale or there is a direct short. Thats how you test things for a short to ground. Ya scratch the frame and touch a wire on the component (that shouldn't be grounded) and if the meter pegs it's junk.
Seriously, your on the right track. Gotta let the meter do the talking. Helps if you have a bud thats done some testing. I'd return that meter and spend about 35$ for a decent digital meter.

lol...it cost about $20, but yea its not a digital,
But IDK, I hate working on a bike w/ this kind of problem... :/
I'm positive that the problem is right under my nose...I'm problem just being retarded.

so i was messing around w/ the bike and i followd the black/yellow and green wire to the 'capacitor discharge ignition unit' so i unplugd that used it to the multimeter....(honestly not really sure wtf i was doing) but the connector for the yellow/black wire doesnt show any Ohms w/ the other connectors...
is that sapsed to happen? lol idkkk.....
...i just want to go riding!!

have you tried a new spark plug or new sparkplug wire?
Doors1024

i tried a new plug and checked for spark with that....just by touching it to the cyl.
and i tested the plug wire for a circuit and everything seemed fine...
I'm taking a guess in saying that its the CDI box or w/e...but i just checked the price and they run about 130 a pop...so idk if im ready to play this guessing game.
can some1 else w/ a 250sx and a multimeter test your CDI box for an ohms reading.....i'll put up the data in a little bit...
But i tell you that i dont get a reading for the plug from the yellow/black wire to the green wire plug....on the CDI box
idk if this is making sense....im kinda tired....

Look, I know it's confusing for someone who hasn't done it but it isn't hard. You simply measure the value and check the book. Then you simply look at the wiring diagram, follow the power and see if the wiring harness has continuity.
I mean - you've got what? A coil,CDI, on/off switch and a harness, I forget if the SX has a pulse generator. The key works or it wouldn't turn over. Test that crap and thats it, piece of cake.
I have repaired lots of machines and NEVER had a CDI,coil or Pulse generator fail. It was always a loose connection, broken wire or a previous repair that failed.
Do you know how many people sell there chit cheap because they give up trying to fix it?, ALLOT!! DON'T GIVE UP!!!! Get a buddy to help you and go one by one with a pen and paper and follow through step by step.
OR, do whatever everyone else does, buy a coil and try it, buy a CDI and try it, buy a harness and try it. Then they sell the bike anyhow....

...I'm destin to find that loose/broken wire....
i hate doing electrial....but i knw its going to me something stupid that i just didnt find yet,
I just bought my little sister a quad, :/, and its bothering me that i can't ride w/ her because my bike desides to mess up on me for the first time ever...
can you repost or send me those pages from the book agn? or does ne one know of a manual online somewher??
thx,

So, you say you went to start it after a couple of months? Does the bike sit outside, or before you parked it did you take it through a water or mud hole, and possibly have a leak on your flywheel cover where water could have gotten in while riding? If that happened in guessing a couple months of sitting would rust some things over, and could prevent spark. If your not getting power out of your case where the flywheel is then your not going to get spark at all. lol I just randomly thought of this theory, but hey, maybe it's right?

i keep it stored indoors and for almost a year now i havn't taken it threw any water at all...
i'm totaly *Do Not Type Around The Word Filters* stumped......i know abso**word filter!** nothing about CDI's and im horrible at electrical work on bikes....
and this multimeter means nothing to me....i get 4 Ohms from the tip of the plug to the frame of the bike....wtf does this mean? i have no idea...but i think its a good thing...
