a few yrs. back my friend gave me my current ride-klt 185. i was riding a ytm 225 at the time. i fixed the klt for 150$ and it runs like a champ. in fact it ran so good it had more power and was faster then the 225 by a bit (and the 225 was in great shape) plus it had reverse so i decided to sell the 225 and keep it. now i hear the 225 had reverse? i couldnt find it! im fixin to put money in my klt(mud tires, snorkel, port the head, etc) but before i do im thinking maybe i should off it and buy another 225 or 250sx? they both have rear suspension and are easier to get parts for. i dont need a racing machine (my other bikes a kx500) just one for mud sand and water crossings. what yall think?:wondering

I wouldnt sell it...almost all of the kawi trikes, at least those in good shape, are pretty rare and unique. For more power and suspension Id go with a 250sx over the yamaha but youll hate yerself the moment you sell yer 185.

I would keep it for sure and just save some money and buy a sx

I'd Keep the KLT, its got 5 speeds, reverse, and shaft drive. Pretty descent setup in all retrospect.

I'd restore it and sell it for BIG BUCKS..

Your 225 might have had reverse but it might not have... Was it a DR (DRS?) or a DX ? The re-treat lever would have been on the right side toward the rear of the engine... I doubt you would have missed it.

I'd keep that 185 man...

for the snorkel, i would just use pvc pipe. For the intake, i would try to seal up the airbox and then run a horizontal pvc pipe from the airbox to the rear of the trike and then put a 90* on and run a pipe up from there. at the top, it would be a good idea to put two 90* fittings on so flying water and mud is less likely to make its way down the pipe. Its also important to make sure your engine breather is sealed into the airbox good and i'd also run the carb vents to the bottom of the airbox.
If your gonna make use of the snorkel much i would definately snorkel the exhaust too. i have seen pvc exhaust snorkels too but im not sure if the heat would affect them. you might be better off running some thin-walled exhaust tubing up from the muffler. One problem you might have is not getting enough traction and having the trike trying to float. If you get the snorkels and mud tires set up on your klt make sure you keep us updated, because right now i cant decide if i want to sorkel one of my trikes or try to find a cheap beat up 4x4 to do the job!

thanks for the advice, im not sure what to do w the exhaust either or if its necessary. the trike already has that floating problem, but im planning on crossing a river along w alot of mud so ill just swim beside it. as for tires im going w the new style mud lites they look like theyd work well. a cheap 4x4 does the job well but its always more fun on 3whls!!

back in 2002 before I joined this site, I came across a klt250. In parts. But I had a majority of what I needed to create a klt 250 is the important part. Having never put a bike together I opted for just selling it off on ebay for 300$. Bought an 85 250sx on ebay for 500$ that was in piss poor condition: I spent 2600$ redoing it, differential, plastics, all bearings, forks, tires and wheels all around, basically every single bearing cable and plastic was replaced except the engine.

Honestly the beating I put my sx through, and the amount of fun I had on it after the restore on it, was truely rewarding. I have to say all the little features It offered like rear suspension, differential, reverse, inability to destroy it after countless submersions in water, made the bike my all time favorite.

but hey, if you love your klt and it meets your needs, then keep it and ride the hell out of it! good luck with the snorkel kit etc

I have a klt 250, in pi$$ poor shape, gotta get around to fixing it up some day. But, unfortunately, there is a queue in my garage of 2 wheeled machines waiting for resto... But, he11 no I wont get rid of it. Why dump any bike that's paid for?

As long as you have room for it, and patience to finish it (and learn), then you may as well always keep it. Then you wont spend time wondering if you should have kept it, you can just walk out to the garage and kick 'er up!

yeah i plan on keeping it for good, just sucks w the parts availability! the only things i dont like are the no rear suspension and low top speed (43mph) other than that its a top notch bike that always leads the pack even over new 4whlrs.
