I made a post a little while back about purchasing a 250sx. That's what I was told it was. Finally went to check it out in person, turns out it's a 250es Big Red. From what I've read, they're almost the same bikes. Drivetrain wise, at least.

When I went to look at it, they had it running. Motor runs great.

However, it won't move under it's own power. I failed to ask a critical question- "Is the power not getting through, or is something binding / keeping it from moving?"

All they said is that it used to drive, but made an rough noise coming from the rear. Now it doesn't move.

They killed the engine and rolled it forward, I could hear I distinct 'clunk clank clink' type noise coming from what sounded like the rear end.

Basically what I'm asking- There any good ways to troubleshoot this stuff without just tearing it apart? I'd like to figure out what is wrong w/ the bike- order the part- and go ahead and just replace it.

How can I tell if it's the rear end? Drain fluid and check the oil?

I read that a common problem were the rear drum brakes becoming seperated and causing problems. Is this a problem?

I'm not familliar with the shaft drive system. Is it just like a truck or car with front and rear u-joints, and a driveshaft in between? Is there any way this could be the issue?

I'll update tomorrow w/ pictures and some more detailed information. I'm aware you guys can't tell me the precise problem with the info I've provided, but I just want some more ideas on what I need to look at- again, hopefully without tearing into it.

Very similar indeed.

Brakes are an issue mostly with the 85 sx. It is a drum brake that is suseptable to H2O.

If your hearing clink clank clunk. Maybe broken driveshaft? Hmm have heard of it happen for sure. They have a u-joint you are correct. Splined on each end. One to accept output on motor the other to accept the rear diff.

I would open up the diff. fill hole and have a peak in there with a flash light after you drain the fluid. Ten mm bolt on side/bottom of diff.

Good luck!
