I scored a carb off Ebay for my Tecate. What do you think. I don't know much about them but here is what i do know. It is a flat side Mikuni that looks about perfect. there was some sludge in it but nothing a can of cleaner didn't solve. I think it is a 38 but not sure. I loded some pics. I never tore a carb apart and don't know the first thing about them. What would be a good place to start with jetting and where are the jets located. Is that it on the bottom of the carb below the plastic piece. I just completed a stock rebuild with a wiesco piston and a DG pipe and silencer. Thanks for any info

well thats not the stock carb that came on the bike if thats what you want to know. and yes the main jet is the peice in the center of the orangish colored collar. however that carbs definately seen like it has seen its better days, the hole in the jet looks plugged up, and i dont even see any floats on it. might be wanting to go get yourself a new tmx38mm carb for that thing. liking the rebuild, good color choice for the frame.

the pecture is before I cleaned it. I looks alot better now. The floats are in the boul, one on each side. they move very freely.
Paint was inspired by a couple guys on here, hope no one minds. I think the white frame is sharp. I got to lazy to pant the motor. Maybe later.

Mikuni TM.
The Jimmy white manual recommends this carb for the Tecate and gives the jetting specs as a baseline for it.

What brake caliper are you using on the front??? Some closer pics and is it fully installed?

ah i dont mind what color people use, in my opinion white is hot looking with the green. both mine are white frames.

Front brake is off a Kx. I won it on Ebay. The guy did not know the year but I just bought a rear setup from him off a 1990, so I bet the front is off the same bike. I hade to do some milling on it and move one hole and make some spacers for it but I am a machinest so it wasn't too bad. I did it while my machine was running at work so I got paid to do it:w00t:

Holy double talk Batman, that caliper has 2 pistons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like.
Maybe you could run some copies of what you've already machined and sell them on here so the rest of us could run a sweet set-up like that. Chris

I have a 01 KX250 caliper that I might try like that. The way you have mounted it looks like there isn't much pad in contact with the rotor?

I think the dirt bike had a lot bigger rotor than the trike. The rotor is pretty much covered by the pad and there is still some pad left. I guess Ill see how it wears. I think a twin piston is a little overkill but it was at the right price.
Now for another question. Today I went to my dealer and tried to order a new spring for my kickstart. They said it was discontinued. I also tried one for a KX but it is the same, discontinued. Is there anything else I can use

Is your spring broken, or is just not wound enough to return?

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!
Went for the first ride yesterday and it ran great for about five minutes then fouled the plug. put a new one in today and there was no spark. Found out somehow the key sheared of the flywheel. Got that fixed and it fired on the first kick. Went for a ride today to my parents and it left me standed. Had to walk home. Might be a little rich.
I got some AMSOil that said to mix at 50:1 but with the new motor I wanted enough oil so I mixed it at 40:1. Do you think the rich oil is why it fouls plugs

No. The new carb is not jetted properly yet.

Dito, anytime you do anything to an engine esipcaly changeing carbs or pipes, porting its like starting over new with jetting. Get the engine DIALED in, Then only minor adjustments to make her RIP each time you ride.

JWR manual says to run that carb with;
Main - 360-380
Needle- 6FJ40 clip 2nd position from top
Needle Jet - 389 Q6
Cutaway - 4.0
Pilot - 35
Airscrew 1.5 - 2 turns out
That should put you in the ballpark.

Got some time to work on the wheeler today. I messed with the carb a little but didnt accomplish anything. I reset the airscrew to 2 turns out and took the jet out of the stock carb and put it in the new one. I also put in a new plug. Now I cant get it to start. It sputters a little and wants to go but then dies out. This is very frustrating. I think I should take it to someone who knows carbs. How do you know what size jets i have. I think there is a number on the end but I can't read it. Also I dont know where the pilot is and what the cutaway is.
For some good news I got a kick spring to work. I got a new spring and bushing for a 94 KX250 and it worked great. If anyone needs a spring that is the way to go.
Is there a copy of the Jimmy White manual on this sight. If there is I can't find it. I also can't find the tecate manual and I know it is here because I downloaded it from here.

Thanks for the offer

Buy the jets listed. Go to sudco.com and look for mikuni TM 38 and it'll have a parts diagram of the carb plus sudco will sell you jets and the right needle/everything.

When you buy jets, always buy atleast 3 in each direction. That way you actually have some wiggle room for trial and error instead of just guessing which direction you need to go, ordering one jet, wait a week for it to get there, etc. Unless you've got a really good assortment its very difficult to get right.

You need to find out what main and pilot are in that carb. My mikuni TMX took a 370 main and like a 35 pilot. Your setup will probably be close to the TMX I had.

took the carb off again and it's not going on again untill I have the parts listed and a couple on each side. I took the pilet jet out(took a little to find) and it had HJ60 on it(I think). The main has 290 on it. That is way small isn't it. Would the main jet make it not want to start. I don't see why it started so well at first and now it won't even with a new plug. The plug has a very nice spark.

60 is way big. Its loading up and flooding your engine. Started at first cuz the motor was dry. Get yourself a 35 and some higher and some lower. Main has nothing to do with starting but yes thats too small as well.
First make sure your float height is correct, 17mm.

I think that the big pilet is most of the problem. I think I was looking at the stock carbs main. I had them together. I think the right main is a 360 or a 380. Hard to tell. I'll get new ones to make sure what I have.
I want to thank everyone for all there help and advice. If any of you are ever in Farley, I'll buy you a couple :beer

Man this is starting to tick me off. About ready to take it to the crusher. Just kidding.
I got a couple jets. Right now I have a 35pilot and a 370main. I can't get it to fire for nothing. It just sputters if I hold it wide open and sometimes backfires.
I think I got the stator in right and it has spark.l I don't know what else it could be.
Guess i'll go try again.

Tried to pull start it. Didn't work. Funny thing thou, when it would fire, the wheels would stop turning and drag. That makes me think that I have the timing advanced. Maybe the flywheel moved on the shaft. I'll have to take it off and check it out.

Key on flywhell is bad again. I'll have to get a new one and not cobble it.

Got it running and running good for the most part. The plug doesn't foul anymore and when I pull it out it is dry and a brown color. I have the 370 main in but I think it is a little lean. It ran and revved well at first but after about 10 minutes of use it started to sputter up high and not want to rev. It ran great at idle and thru the midrange. I'll have to order a 380 and a 390 main jet.

Good stuff! When you get the new jets in start with the biggest and work down.
Don't forget to get those Banshee shock pics! An 86 Tecate dogbone link will let you lower the rear more if you feel the need.

Before you do anymore jetting, do a leakdown test to make sure thats not causing an issue.
