That is about the farthest thing from Devil's Backbone I have ever seen - comparing apples to oranges - or trikes to quads.

Cool Vid - but as far as skill - it takes way more skill to tackle the Devil's Backbone. - So I would say no - it does not make the Devil's Backbone look spineless.

Dammit!

I've seen the devils backbone (and worse) and I've seen lots of dunes. None of them compare to hundred dollar hill. It's one of those things you have to not only see but at least attempt to climb to appreciate the scale and steepness of it. I found the official state run site for it a while back that put the official height at like 974 feet or something very close to that. It's really ridiculous. Can't find the link right now though.

I love going to the dunes but to me that would be totally boring just cruising the side of 1 dune. Where are the jumps and nasty trails and razorbacks to sidehill on?

I'd like to try dunes someday but I'm sure I'd be bored in a few hours....

Sand and an incline has NOTHING on rocks and rough terrain....

Dammit!

No you wouldn't. Trust me on that. Riding real dunes is unlike anything else and it definitely does not get boring. It's more challenging than it looks but I won't get into what is more or less difficult. Totally apples and oranges.

This may not apply to those little sand hills they have back east. Silver Lake or whatever it's called. Those barely qualify as dunes from what I've seen. ;)

I grew up riding in Ohio. I'm lucky because I've been fortunate enough to have done just about every kind of riding you can do on a trike. Woods, (informal) MX, rock quarries (sp?), mud bogs, deserts, sand dunes, snow, hillclimbing and whatever you want to call Cinders (it's not really dunes and it's not exactly desert either). I've done far more back east type riding than dune riding actually but I was hooked after my first weekend at the Imperial Sand Dunes. It's like riding on another planet. Especially at night. I highly recommend everybody that's into trikes try to make it to the dunes someday with a good group of experienced riders.

I agree..the dunes are awesome. The closest I could describe it is like snowmobiling during the summer. Its like riding a roller-coaster, only you are the one driving. Make sure to take someone experienced with you though, for safety and for fun. Theres nothin funner than sittin by the campfire at night talkin about the dune that you got stuck on or that one "big hill", or that idiot that almost ran you over. Take someone responsible and experienced with you that knows how to read the sand. Sand dunes can be (and are) extremely dangerous. You will be riding along what appears to be a perfectly flat patch of ground, and out of nowhere there will be a sheer 40ft drop-off with rocks at the bottom. Even the little ripples in the sand that are only a foot or two heigh are extremely hard to see when the sun is at top-dead-center, and often times the distance to the edge of a bowl is deceving without a shadow.
I'm like you, I'm a trail rider 99% of the time, but you'll get hooked on the other 1% in no time.

I don't know what the dunes are like where you ride, but out here they are MASSIVE.

This is my first try with photobucket, dont know if it'll work.
1.In the first pic if you look real close you can see a bunch of atv'ers parked along the top of a ridge toward the center of the picture. You can also see the wind blowing off the dunes in the back of the pic. That should give you an idea of how big they are.

2.In the second pic you can see the dune is so steep that the sand is sliding off the hill. Pic doens't do the steepness too much justice.

3.The third pic is just some rolling dunes, but if you look carefully at the bottom on the pic you can see the lip to a ledge that my bud was standing on when he took this pic. Didn't notice it at first, did you? Thats about a 22ft dropoff right there, luckily its rolled at the bottom. Thats what you have to be carefull of.

I think Sand Mountain at Little Sahara in Utah would have to be one of, if not the largest, sand hill in the country.
