granted there is an old thread that touches on this subject. however im looking for fresh ideas.

besides eating/drinking less.. where if at all are you finding significant weight loss on your old beloved, eg: wheels/tyres,hubs,swinger,axle,bars and so on..
had any positive or neg experiences in trying to lighten your machine?
pls share..

The biggest weight loss item for your bike will be swapping out the stock exhaust system, if you haven't already done that. If I remember correctly, the stock expansion chamber weighed 7 lbs., and the spark arrestor weighed 13 lbs., while most aftermarket exhaust systems are a mere fraction of that. After that, all the other weight loss items will pale in comparison.

What about a tube style swinger? trimmed plastic, lightweight aluminum rims with 2 ply tires, find ways to shave weight on the motor maybe? if the sub frame is steel replace it with strong lightweight aluminum, shorty levers and perches, newer lighter thumb throttle, change the pegs for lighter ones or drill them, lighter hubs, lighter radiator maybe? shave the seat foam, drill plastic on the seat pan, plastic gas tank, lighter after market triples? getting rid of the front brake system if you don't use it ever, and you yourself you on a diet. So hows that? how did I do? For the record I don't have a 250R and am just throwing these ideas out there.

weigh savings will be with a lighter front hub, aftermarket exhaust, aluminuim swinger, the other stuff isn't a place to save weight or worth it. You certainly don't want aluminuim foot pegs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or to drill them. By the way, 85/86 250r's have a plastic gas tank. Its cheaper and also better for you to lose weight verses the bike. A aluminuim subframe would give a weight savings also.

Probably have to make one. I think BigGreenMachine posted the CT Racing Ultralight 250R article in the open forum a couple days ago? Try a search for it to get an idea on other stuff you can cut down.

This thread is also an old one so you might get more replies if you started a new one.

Not all aluminum wheels of the same size for the same vehicle weigh the same. Only a direct comparison would determine the exact difference.

From the hiper wheel site:

"Weight is determined by material density and the amount of material used. Our Carbon Fiber material has a much lower density than aluminum but we use a thicker cross section. On average, HiPer Racing Wheels then are around the same weight of an aluminum equivalent, but is 2-3 times the strength. We traded equal weight for three times the strength. You win. Go HiPer"

You can also reduce the weight by using titanium hardware, exhaust pipe and springs. Aluminum gas tank. Magnesium carburetor. Aluminum swing arm and axle carriers etc.

I don't know anyone mass producing a magnesium carb but if you had enough money you can get most anything made. The 2 mfg's I am aware of that made them are Dellorto and Mikuni. A flat slide magnesium one would be lighter than a round side because the slide is lighter in a flat style carb.
