Now that I have some time to sit and type I might as well share my summer project. I have been missing the little atc 70 I sold 2 years ago so back in May when I saw one in the paper for $200 it was calling my name. I waited a week (I was out of town) and called, sure enough it was a project trike. When I checked it out the guy said he worked on mini bikes (he had at least 6 in the garage) and that he didn’t want to mess with the trike, I offered $150 and he helped me load it up.

I wish I had the before pictures here but I don’t you will have to wait till it is done to see them:p . Anyways it wasn’t in too bad of shape, all 3 tires were dry rotted to the point that I could put my hand through the cracks in them, the electrical was a mess and the tank was a rusted out xr75 tank. Other then that it looked like it sat in a barn for 10 years:rolleyes: . I was excited having a 70 again so I went to work with the electrical. After wiring up a kill switch I was able to get it running, sort of. It ran very rough for about 5 seconds and wouldn’t rev, but I heard it run!:Bounce

Now for what you want, the pictures! This is what took me June and July, I then switched over to repainting my bike and replacing the transmission on my car. The 70 will be completed next spring. I have a tank that needs to be painted and I think I will paint the fenders as well, then I have to get the electrical working again, the spark is very weak and inconsistent. It's getting close.

I have used….
black appliance epoxy spray paint (ACE brand)
light gray spray paint (ACE brand I think)
GM super Red (2 part NAPA auto paint and a clear coat)
Hi-temp black for the head and exhaust (don’t remember the brand)
Caswell Zinc plating kit for the bolts

Thought I should give an update on this project. It turns out the engine was junk, the crank had striped threads, bad cam chain, worn rings, striped spark plug hole, you get the idea…. Luckily I bought an ’85 roller with an engine in parts over the fall so that engine became the heart of this project. So far I have it running but it is lean in the mid throttle range and it drips oil from the exhaust stud (the previous owner drilled into an oil passage when heli-coiling the stud threads:crazy: ). I ordered a new carb. slide, head gasket, and cam chain for it, those should be in and installed next week.

Now I need to get the extra head with the stripped plug hole fixed so I can swap it over.

p.s. Are the pictures too big?

I’m calling this project done. It starts right up, idels smoothly and runs well. I fixed the plug hole and put in the new carb needle which did the trick.

New parts…

3 tires
Full carb rebuild kit
Cam chain
Points / condenser
Piston / rings (stock bore)
Air filter
Drive chain

*Edit* Here is a short video. I pulled it out and it started on the second pull but my dad didn't get the camera started, so for the video it started on the 1st pull still cold.

Too bad I don’t have the room for it so it will probably be listed for sale shortly…..

Someone sanded the fenders, the back still needs some polishing.

Yeah I pulled the ripped stock seat cover off and tried to make another one but my sowing machine doesn't like vinyl so the cover came out with lose seams. I tried the pulling using one piece instead but when you have to use the metal hooks on the pan it is hard to do! Plastic pans are so much better.

I think atcheaven or something like that in Australia makes a fiberglass pan but nobody that I know of makes a plastic one. Rusty seat pans are a common problem. Mine has some rust so I cleaned it up and por-15 coated it, it should be good for a long time now.

i gotta couple of questions because im currently in the middle of a build for a ? 70 (dont know the year). did you polish all of the metals? like the handle bars and grab bar. also, how did you sand the frame and clean it? im having a real hard time cleaning and sanding it. any advice would help. i want mine to be all black.

The chromed pieces like the handle bars and grab bar were in good shape when I got it, I just went over it with some very fine (0000 grade) steel wool. As for the frame, I used a spray on chemical paint striper (nasty stuff so be careful with it) and then sand blasted the hard to get at areas.

so the sand blasting. did you do it yourself? and howd you use the steel wool i dont understand how it works? and paint stripper too to help sand?
