Next week we are going to OK to little sahara. I just finished a complete top and bottom end rebuild on my 250r with a paul turner national midrange port job. In the past with just a pipe and k&n I ran some cheap dune hoppers on steel rims and the stock 13 39 gearing. The bottom end power was good but it would pull the top of 6th on the long strights. Now with the additional power riding around here it will run right up to the end of 6th like it needs another gear. I ordered 14 cause you can only get a front gear for a 85 but this will most likely be too tall for the sand. What do you guys think? The other question is with the rebuild I am not really ready to buy tires yet $$$. I still have the hoppers which are worn and cracked in the bottom of a couple of the paddle but seem to do OK on the R. I also have some sand trackers I could use. I mostly do fast hills and not much sliding. Whats the better tire? Both tires are 20s. If I do use the hoppers I can mount them on my new itp alum mags.

22's will get you going very nice :) As for brand the best stad to be skat tracs but yea they can be pricey.. I think kenda makes a good set though

I run 22" knobbys with 13 39 and was told once that dropping the front sprocket one tooth would basically return me to the stock gearing. So I imagine that running a 14 tooth sprocket with 20" tires would make you feel like you had 22". I was pleased with the setup, however I did not run any steep hills in anything above 3rd.
With the extra power you should now have, go ahead and try the 14, and if it doesn't provide the "pull" on the hills then switch back to the 13.
Hope this helped some.
