I live on a lake up here (well not really on it, more like on the edge :D ) and since most of us are starting to get bigger bikes, we kinda wanted to set up an ice track on the lake when it freezes over to play on. Mostly just to get a bunch of guys together and practice and have a few races on, nothing real official.
What I was wondering is if anyone knew what the dimensions were for a track? Any standard size or does it just vary? Not really too worried about being 100% accurate, but I would like it to be pretty close. Thanks to anyone who can help!

I don't know the dimensions for a track, but if you get one set up I'd love to come by and do a few laps with my SX. It'll be motivation to put my R together...

I ain't sure of any AMA rule that say's a track has to be any certain size, but I am on the committee for the oval's up here and the 1st year we had a small oval set-up and it was just too tite,I am guessing 150' on either side with of course the corner's,for the oval.Which on my 85 R was 2nd gear and 3rd on the straight's.I won that year ,and almost lapped the pack in 10 lap's.Now last year we opened up to about 300' on the straight's ,and I raced my 350x.The track was way faster and you could get 4th on the straight's.Dead last last year,my machine kept popping. Now when I practice on a different lake with the Harley's ,BSA's ,and the big Thumper Bike's,those guy's have a track that is 400' on the straight's,and huge corner's.Lot's of speed on that one.On my R I could come out of a corner in 3rd pegged and ready for 4th easy.If your running quad's and your properly studded ,you'll have the advantage. This year i am running my 600x..Can't wait!!

I never ice race but I admit there is a lot of fun to have on a lake with a trike.
One winter I'm gonna stud some tire.;)

Well the biggest machine that will run on there will probably be my R, and my friends 350x, and mostly 200x's or whatever else anybody brings out, so I dont think were gonna need 400' straights. Sounds like 2-300 ft straights would be fine? How long are the turns, looks like 100-150ft? And whats a good width for the track?
Also, whats the best way to plow and maintain the track? Would a truck be fine or should we use like a 4 wheeler or mower plow?

Get out here man!!! Willows empty!!! We go up the Pass a lot, hopefully we can all have our machines ready before next year, planning on going all the way up to the cabins and take all the trails we havent before. Theyre pretty fun rides, you should come out for some of them next year!

I'll have to do that; Except for Red Mountain/Kings River I haven't been on any of the trails north of the Valley. The riding season is far from over; if I have time I was planning on going out to Knik/Jim Creek this Sunday (the 16th).
