I have found a 86 Tri-Z that is completely torn down minus the engine. I would like to build it for strictly dunes so I'm looking for power. What is the best route for an engine for this? I have done a search and have seen the 490, I have also read that the YZ motor wont work, so Im looking for some options here....

Its like the 1983 YZ250 PV motor will work. The iT465 will also work.

I have come across that the newer yz motors will work but the rear steel bushings in the back of the motor need to be swaped out as the swingarm bolt is a diffrent size..thats as far as I got so far,,

Brian, do you know what years of newer motors?
This is great info if you can find out what years will fit. I have been given a free 85 Tri-Z and it does not have an engine.
It needs a lot of things, But it was free!!!

I'm positive it's not a bolt on. I would not use a banshee engine if it was given to me, I rather use a 450 4 stroke. But that's just me. What I would like it's to make this a runner and enjoy it, thanks for the suggestion tho
If anyone knows what year(s) YZ engines fit It gives everyone a lot more options.
Post up guys!!!!

Aren't the '82-'87 YZ lower ends the same as the Tri-Z? It seems somewhere I heard someone say '82-'92 YZ fits, but not sure how the cases changed after '87.
83-86 yz lower ends or complete motors are a direct swap.Smaller fywheels will give you some extra umphh.I know the 86 Yz bottom end in mine seams to run better than a Tri-z bottom end.Dont know why,but the cases and gears are Identical. If you dont mind losing your lighting system.

Any of the resident TRI-Z experts know if there's a way that a 95 YZ 250 engine can fit, even if it takes some modding?
Will the exhaust fit?
I was offered one very cheap but have not seen the motor myself and it's in pieces, but complete (minus piston).
