This issue has been discussed and discussed through and through. But I always remember the thread dammit (I think he made it anyways, I can't find the thread). Where he tested it in the dunes and got 62...I thought that was low as hell.
Well I got a GPS a few months ago, and tested the topspeed of my 200s (43.6 mph). Well my buddy got talking about wanting to see the TS of his pocket bike and I thought hmm, I got an R, might aswell see what that is while I'm at it.

Did 2 runs, here's the best of the 2.

74.2 mph.
GPS- Garmin Etrex legend.
My bike has DG full, UNI air and that's it, basically stock. It's an '85 if it makes a difference.
12T front, 20" rears. I don't know if those are stock tire and sprocket sizes or not.

What surface were you running on?

I believe 13 tooth front sprocket is stock. Stock tires are are 20".

That top speed is correct. They will vary a little with each rider and bike. So give or take a few mph. :Bounce Awsome to see some speed figures.:Bounce :TrikesOwn

What surface were you running on?

Exactly. In my experience, the extra drag and resistance from paddles and sand lops off 10mph easy.

Regardless, thanks for sharing. GPS doesn't lie!

Flat straight pavement. I wanted it to be neutral as possible. I am 6'2" 215 lbs.

That's probably the best way to do it--take as many variables out of the equation as possible. :beer

I definitely agree with that. C'mon everybody, lets see your top speed on gps, it could be like an online drag race.

I also have a gps unit, and i end up with right about the same results.

haha back in the day when I was a youngen my old man and uncles where racing on the tecate and my current 250r (before I owned it :) ) and did it the old fashioned way, having a truck run next to them and they had the speedo pegged at 85mph and they were going!that was before hand held gps lol

does anyone know how fast a 85 200x goes? according to my brothers speedo in his truck it does 56mph. yep the old fashion way!:beer

Thats probably about right, 56 is about the stock speed of a 200x. Though when I had 15/38 gearing on my 86, along with 22'' tires I had it to 63 according to a gps. Then I switched to 14/38 with 20'' tires. So thats about the same as stock gearing and I didnt try to see how fast it goes yet.

Dammit!

Yep. I haven't ever tested my R with a GPS on pavement but I know it would be considerably better than the 64mph it was doing in the sand that day (the drags are pretty soft deep sand). I'd love to do a speed run on pavement but I don't know anywhere around here that I could get away with it. If any of you Phoenix people know a good place, lets hit it. I'll bring the GPS.

Even at 64mph I was going faster than the 450's I was running with that day. Not by a ton but my top speed was definitely a little bit higher than theirs. So much for the "my 450whatever can do 85mph stock!" nonsense.

I have some fine tuning to do since I put the PT on there. We'll see if I can squeak out another few mph out of it even in the sand this season. I keep gaining weight though. That ain't gonna help.

at about 73 inches and 275 pounds, my 200x will do 52 with one flat rear tire. 22x12.5x8. and it's running like crap. i figure with a little love i can at least hit sixty on this thing. bored over with an exhaust and some jetting...which is driving me insane. running lean up high i believe and won't idle.....

-Bringing back a oldie-

I recently picked up a handheld Magellan gps unit and have been taking it everywhere. I've always been curious of what speed my 85 R would do in top gear. I finally got the chance to take it out to the beach on saturday and was kind of surprised by the results.

With stock gearing (13/39) and 20" tall paddle tires (cyclones), I had it as close to redline as I felt safe. She was screaming, in 6th gear and the GPS says................

60mph, with a slight tail wind. Going the opposite way on the beach i was in the bottom of 6th, facing the wind.

I've read on average people are getting like 74ish on pavement. Is mine so much slower because of the sand and the drag of the paddles?

It's not a very big deal to me as the only time I'm hitting these kinds of speeds is on the beach usually. I just wanted to see if anybody could confirm this. Unfortunately, I don't have anywhere around here that I could put the knobies on a hard/flat surface to see what it would do.

thanks.

33.5mph (gps), fresh US90 stock eng, in a 78 frame, 2.5psi in new tires, china carb, level dirt road, my other virgin all 78' 90 wont even pull 4high (borderline hijack sorry)

With my 200s with stock gearing and 22in tires I think I might be able to do 45-50 mph. I calculated it with a speed calculator and I think it was 45 at 7k rpm. According to my tach the most I've pulled in 5th is a little over 7k, but I don't wanna keep revving that high for too long.

I got 67.3 on a hilly dirt road with my 86r. No picture though.

53 mph on pavement. stock (I think) '83 200E. clocked by a car on a private paved road. was wearing a helmet of course.

can I get 60 out of her with out to many crazy mods? I ride with a lot of quads and when we ride the roads to the next trail, they leave me behind.

I have this crazy idea to do over 100mph so I went radical with my gearing 15/34 and my band doesnt open in 5th gear now. I have aftermarket race almost everything except a pipe (soon enough) with a bigger air filter for more flow. Does anyone think that with a good pipe that this is possible??

If she is running in tip top shape, then 60mph with paddles and in sand seems about the correct speed. Actually that's lightning fast on a bumpy surface like sand. I want to say that it's got something to deal with the paddle tires or you not getting the same traction on sand as you would pavement.

FYI - if any of you guys have a Droid - there is an app called SpeedView. It is free. It gives Max speed. It also gives 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. I need to test some of my bikes. I have noticed also that on high speed pavement runs - if you have a tire out of balance, or a bent axle - you will feel them really shake bad at high speeds - kind of un-nerving if you ask me. Thanks to member FastZ28 for the Speedview app.

We Did GPS speed runs in the sand flats. Tested an '85 250R. It got 64 mph. Pretty soft sand. We also tested my '86 350X an '86 Tri-Z and a 2002 cannondale moto edition 440. All trikes had 20 inch rears. The cannondale had 18's.

The 350X got 54.5 mph.

This Sunday we r hoping to do pavement runs.

The cannondale got 68mph and that's with 18's in the soft sand. That thing is nuts fast.
