I have an old atc 70 gas tank I need to seal the inside but theres alot of rust so what household cleaner can I use to get rid of the rust?

And make it still sealable?

I think I told someone else how to do this about a month ago. It boils down to this. Buy a Kreem kit from either Dennis Jirk or Parts Unlimited. Put a bunch of nuts and bolts in the gastank and shake the hell out of it. This will knock alot of the rust loose and you can rinse it out. Then, just follow the Kreem kits directions. I've had much better results with using the whole bottle of acid at once though. Allow a few days for the liner to dry before you put your petcock back on and fuel in the tank.

Contact a local radiator repair shop , they can boil them out and seal them with a product called Redkote, much better then Kreem in my opinoin.

Yeah, I haven't tried that method yet blue27. About how much should it set you back?

It would vary from shop to shop , but around 50 to 70 I think and for that I just hand it to them and they call in a day or so and its done , cleaned sealed and pressure tested. No mess to worry about and it does not take off the paint or decals. I sent mine through the local Kawi Dealer (Wifes works there) and they have sent many tanks out both dirt and street. You can buy the redkote to do it yourself but sometimes it just easier to pay a little extra to have it done right the first time. lol

Hey, thanks for the info. I'm sure James will thank you for it to. So true about paying other people, especially when they can do it cheaper than your time is worth.

Well Yes I've heard of kreem but I am thinking of just putting rocks in it and shaking then buy the sealer and all that?

muriatic acid will clean that rust out of there. Acetone will neutralize it.

Dammit!

Kreem sucks. Red Kote is made for diesel trucks and airplanes. Much higher quality stuff in my opinion. I had a tank that was treated with kreem and I was able to pull almost the entire lining out in one piece because it didn't stick to the tank well enough.

I took one tank to a radiator shop and they took all the paint off along with the rust. Charged me $60 and just used red kote. If I knew that's what they used I would have saved my money and done it myself. You can get a quart of Red Kote of ebay for $35 and it's enough to do three tanks.

Muriatic acid like Chris mentioned will take the rust out completely. Fill the tank one third or halfway up with acid, then the rest of the way with tap water from the hose and let it sit for a little while to eat the rust up. Rinse the acid out, then slosh a good amount of acetone around in the tank, dump that out and red kote it immediately (it will flash rust if you don't).

Be very careful of the fumes coming out of the tank! Don't let that get in your eyes or inhale it. I got just a whiff of it and it's not pleasant.

I did a tank this way and it didn't even damage the paint. Gotta be careful though. Make sure you remember to take the petcock filter tube out first!

Agreed, I've done around 14 tanks at this point with kreem, the only time it didn't work right was the first time I did it. I do wanna give redcoat a try though.

I have great luck with POR-15 brand Tank Sealer. Pick it up at your local Auto Body Paint retailer.

i have used CLR many times and it does get the rust out but it dont seal the spot where the rust was. i just try to keep a full tank so the rust cant come back.
