Thought you guys would find this study very interesting. I stumbled across it in the links listed when I looked up "three wheeler" on wikipedia.

We were all unskilled idiots at one point! Just some were unfortunate and got severely mangled. I think if we all look back we all have been involved in cases where we were "lucky" to walk away.

I have some interesting stats somewhere on my home computer that I will post. It shows the difference between how many trikes were made and how many fatal accidents compared to quads during the later years. It also includes how many were sold during that time frame. Its a pretty extensive chart system that took many hours getting down right.

i agree with jeffatc, we were all unskilled idiots at one time. did yah notice the article was about injuries to children also, not about adults.

my 6 year old son wants a 3 wheeler bad because i have one. there is a 70 in the neighborhood not being used and i will pick it up one day,the owner said he will let me get it when they are done with it.
but i am in no hurry to put my young son on a 3 wheeler. i feel he is safer on his little 4 wheeler. We will get that ATC 70 some day but not any time soon.
He will probably get hurt on his 4 wheeler one day anyway, but i know he would get hurt on that 70 the way he likes to plow into things and jump ramps and push over trees and whatever else.

i have had about a dozzen 3 wheelers and will have more. One of the things i like about 3 wheelers is they are sort of dangerous, they take allot of skill to ride them fast without getting hurt, you get allot of respect from other riders when they see you keeping it old school on a nice 3 wheeler and ridding the piss out of it.

But i will keep my yound son on 4 wheels until he is older, stronger, and smarter.
I sort of feel that any idiot can ride a 4 wheeler.

the same amount or more some times lots more people get hurt on 4 wheelers than they ever did on 3 wheelers, and they should of never stoped making them, the parents need to have good judgment and keep there kids relitivly safe, because young kids are idiots and they can get hurt so fast on anything at anytime.you have to know your child and know the bikes, and teach them the bikes.

one thing id like to say about the 3 wheeler injury stat list is that back in the mid 80s if i or my buddys would get hurt on a trike we would say we were on a dirt bike or a quad if the doctor asked.

we could see the end comming and thought this might help, but if we did it think of all the other people who did this......those stats are way off

I agree, my first time driving a trike I almost rolled it at 2mph

Well, you cant take this article as a representation of the whole.

The article involved only children because these stats are only from the Children`s Mercy Hospital here in Missouri.

Those 36 injuries that came in were ONLY in St. Louis, and Kansas city it seems.

I like and have ridden 3 wheelers, and also own one. They are inherently dangerous by their desing but that's not the problem. One starts out going slow and then that first time comes when it starts to tip over. That should be a lesson learned but unfortunately a lot of people just don't get it.

The main danger with 3 wheelers, 4 wheelers and motorcycles is the magazines about the sports! Try to find an issue that doesn't have a machine in mid-air on the cover! You won't find one. Inside the issues you find page after page of races, guys flying in the air and wild action. OOOHHHhhhh, I WANT one of those! And a guy who has never ridden a similar machine, 2, 3 or 4 wheel, in his life gets on it and in 5 minutes he's trying to grab air and be oh, so cool, just like the guys in the magazines.

Most guys wouldn't want to go riding with me, putting along wherever I want to go, slow and easy, enjoying the ride and the sights and fun of it. BOR-ing! Yep, and so is that long wait in the ER until the surgeons show up. I'll take the former over the latter any day of the week, thanks
