So i thought it was overheating... usually my gastank doesn't get warm, well it did... so i shut it off and coasted through the backyard, ran to get the laser temp gizmo, so i'd say a minute between shutting it off and taking the temp...

Temp is as follows

Cylinder, Exhaust side - 283
Exhaust Pipe - 500+ (it flatlined... flatlines at 500)
Lower case - ~240

So i'm guessing thats high...maybe not?

It ran like hell and everything so i don't think i hurt it.. hopefully...

Any suggestions... I didn't hear any funny sounds while i was riding, but i've missed things before...

air cooled motors run alot hotter than a liquid cooled motor, my 300 R feals like riding the sun around but it still ran great, not sure what the exact operating temp would be for a X does it have a high comp piston?

not that i know of.... stock piston i think, never tore into it.... i checked the oil and took an oil sample... it had a little bit of metallic in it but i'd say thats clutch.... i changed the oil less than 2 weeks ago and the oil level is a little above the top line on the stick so its good... it doesn't leak at all either....

Anyone out there that just got back from riding that can go check their temp on an air cooler???

Your probably not too far off for an air cooler... I can't even think about touching my plug after riding and I'd bet thats about 300 degrees just like an oven. If your oil is full and circulating with a good plug color, I'd say your right in the range.

It does sounds about right. My 200x never got that hot to not be able to touch the plug. I can usually loosen it and pull it out with bare hands. But the tank getting hot dosent sound right? My tank never gets hot, neither does the frame close to the engine? How how is is where you were operating it?

it is about 55-65 out..... running 10-40 with about a half a cup of lucas oil additive, the tank gets WARM.. not hot.... on the sides of the tank, lower half of it...

It has a DG pipe on it so theirs no heat guard so the pipe is more exposed.... that could contribute to the heat i suppose...

My exhaust is exposed also, but still never gets that hot. Possibly its running very lean and the exhaust is distributing more heat causing it to get warm??

In my old 85 200x I ran 10w-40 and it was running pretty warm to normal then I switched to 20w-50 and it ran cooler. Oil makes a huge difference. Check your jets, make it a little rich and try it out.
