Hey there. I just got a KTM MXC 300. Ridden it before, awesome machine, what can I say. I need help with some stuff though. Anybody with previous dirt bike, KTM or hell, ANY experience is welcome here.
- Does anybody know any common problems with these bikes? It's a 1998 (not 99 like my signature says).
- The brake pedal flops around some. I think it's probably just a loose bolt, or can it be something more sinister? It works fine, just wobbles left and right a lot.
- The rear shock is totally blown out. What brand shocks came in these bikes? Where can I get it rebuilt (we have 2 dealerships in town that do ATV/snowmobile shocks, but they're Bombardier and Polaris/Yamaha dealers, not sure if they'll do KTM shocks)
- The forks have mosquitoes all over the front and an oily substance on them. I'm guessing the seals are leaking, because they feel a little too soft to be right. Can I get these rebuilt, or should I do it myself? I'm on a tight budget.
- Is it common for the clutch to not entirely disengage when it's been used for a long time? The bike doesn't want to roll in gear with the clutch in, it seems to drag a little. Fixes for this problem?
Thanks all!

Hello, Try to adjust your clutch cable a bit. If that dont help than you either have a worn basket like the guy above said, or your disks are worn out.....or both who knows. If your clutch basket has grooves in it just take a file to them and smooth it out, thats what i did with that crummy 125 i had and it worked great. As for your forks and rear shock, Im not sure but you may be able to find what you need on ebay. I ride honda though so i have no clue whats on there for KTM. :beer

The shock rebuild can be done by someone that is pretty good with their hands and patient. Since you probably have the regular fork, they will be easier to change out vers the inverted ones like mine. The suspension on KTM's are top notch esp what the factory gives you. So rebuilding them will give you awesome suspension.
The clutch on some bikes seem to be really hard or barely working if it sat up for a long time. Just adjust it where you can get it started and get the fluids going inside the bike. Once its running and warm, you should be able to adjust it back to your specs. Also I would think about chaning the fluids out, to clear any garbage out of the cases.
I believe the brake pedal is just on a post with a pin thru it. Take it off and clean the area really well and then put some gasket material around the shaft area before installing. This should help tighen it up, plus it will keep trash from getting around the shaft.
There is a place online, MX-Tech, that you can put your bike and weight and find out exactly what type of shock is needed. They even sell them at a fair price, around 125 or so. http://www.mx-tech.com/ Just use the spring generator and it will help find what type of shock you might need. Heck you might be able to find that spring you need on ebay.

I believe I have inverts. Inverts are wider on top, with the actual slider tube on the bottom near the wheel, correct?
P.S. Thanks a ton, Scott. Really helpful post.
P.P.S. I tried the spring generator, and they didn't have my year (1998) so I chose 2000. I know that the 2000+ KTM MXC 300's were different from earlier models. Will 2000 shock and fork springs fit? Thanks!

My CR does the same thing with the clutch, I just push it in neutral. Never have any problems with the clutch at all.
