Can the head be taken off with the motor in the frame? Cylinder?

Yes. Just pay ettention and do not rush it. I however, suggest pulling the engine any way. That way you can go over it better and repeair any other problems you might not be aware of. It also makes the top end work easier.

Yeah I know the best thing would be to pull the engine out and pull the top end, but I have 2 projects to finish before I can devote some more time to it.
It mainly depends on what the valves look like and if they are the cause of the sudden loss of compression in this motor.
Anyway thanks for the reply. I have the manual but it doesn't say or show that the head could come off in the frame.

I think the agrivation you will deal with will be worth pulling the whole engine.
