View Full Version : Who has a bigwheel?

Ok, so not the kind with plastic tires we all had when we were little, but the Yamaha Bigwheel? Or a Fatcat but I'm a yammi guy. And I know it's technically not a trike but the look like alot of fun... Any rants or raves about these things? I've been thinking of getting one but all the ones on eGay are too far away :(

1985 Yamaha Bigwheel 200. All factory original minus the stock airfilter, one screw, one seal, and one lightbulb. Just took off the original chain and sprockets for replacement the other day too. They are really fun bikes to ride.
As far as rants or raves go, they are their own beast. They are not a performance bike, but will go up anything you point them at. Lots of torque in the lower gears. They turn heads everywhere you go. Nothing better than going for a ride with a 3 wheeler and a BW in the back of your truck.
Like I said, they are their own beasts. They tend to go where ever they want, kinda like a horse. The steering is the hardest part of riding one. It takes a lot of man-handling to keep them pointed in the right direction. But like any other bike, every bike has its own personality and takes practice to learn. The general concensus about the BW and Fat Cats is that riders tend to either hate them or love them for what they are. Don't get me wrong, I love my BigWheel.

I have an 85 bw200. It goes through snow, creeks, mud, just about anything. I have towed saucers and sleds with it in the snow, way fun. Parts aren't too crazy for them yet. Some of the air box bits are discontinued. I managed to find a protec header for mine and am looking to put a supertrapp muffler on it. I also have to replace the right side clutch cover due to an accident from a previous owner. I got pretty much 90% of the parts from the yammi dealer. My 85 is a kick start, 86 and later are electric starts. They also had a bw350, big bucks though. All honda fatcats are electric start. I like the kick start on mine. I also just put on a tri z front end with the disc brake and all. Can't hardly wait to put it through it's paces with the new goodies on it. The steering and ride are a little different with the low wide tires, but once you get used to it, it's quite a blast.

those things look like a blast! now I really want one. I bet the 200 would be fun, but a 350? How can you go wrong with that?

prices for a decent 350 are about 3k and they are hard to come by

I would like to have one of each eventually.. an 80, 200, and 350.

I had two 200s and a 350, but were a lot of fun but not my cup of tea...i actually liked the 200 better cause its a little lighter and the power difference isnt that noticable cause, in my opinion, they are both turds. all they needed were 2 more valves.

I miss mine a bunch. I had to sell it about 10 years ago to get some cash for college. They will go through anything. I had it buried half way up the gas tank in water going through a creek and it had no problem.

Yamaha made the BW or Big Wheel.
Rally4x4Racer has a Big Wheel 80.
They made a Big Wheel 200 and 350 also.

Honda made the Fat Cats.
I'm not sure of what models and sized they offered.

Your BW80 rim bolted right up to your 200x hub???

my dad took me to get a bw200 brand new in late 85 or so.... we looked at them for awile and decided to go look in the basment of the yamaha dealer (ware the used bikes were kept) to see if they had a used one.

well we found a under 1 year old 85 200x with a kerker pipe and a 12 to 1 piston in it and took that home instead..... i still never rode a bw but always wondered about them

Finally got some things finalized on the bw200, but still have to repair the side cover or find a decent used one. I figured I would put some pics up. Notice the pro-tec exhaust header and the supertrapp exhaust. Thanks to rally4x4 who recovered my seat for me, great job!

The great gazoo came over today and we worked on the BW. I had finally got spark back after the purchase of a really nice used stator set up. I had to get a new cover for the oil screen as mine was trashed. Also I had to come up with a better gasket, since the factory gasket didn't seem up to the task. A little experimenting at work and I ended up making a 2 part gasket, 1 part nylon or teflon gasket and one part rubber gasket which the 2 combined gave me the right width and thickness I needed to make a nice tight seal. So after installing that and filling with some new oil, we proceeded to put on all missing pieces. Filled with some fresh gas and after turning petcock to reserve and the tri z run switch, she fired up in 4 kicks. Sounded pretty decent with the Pro Tec head pipes and the Tig welded Supertrapp muffler. We putted it up and down the street several times. The tires were kind of low so steering was even slower than normal with the tri z front end. But it is cool though and unique. A good day all in all.

I have an extra right side cover if you need it. I got a deal on a left and a right and I needed the left. I think the carb was a little dirty and I put less than a gallon of fuel in it and I think the carb was still filling with gas when I was kicking it over! LOL Yeah, I was kind of psyched about getting it running again. I pulled the neighborhood kids in the snow on their saucers! We all had a blast. Then pulled the partents on the saucers after the kids went inside! LOL PM me your address and I'll get that fender sent out to you.

I've owned both: Yamaha BW 200 and a Honda Fatcat. The Honda was definitely easier and more fun to ride. I think the main difference is that the BW 200 has such a wide rear tire, that it needs a jackshaft and a double chain setup to make it work and since the tire was so wide, it made turning kinda hard and unpredictable, but i agree with what everyone else said on here which is the fact that the BW will go anywhere you point it, mud hills, snow, over rock...very torquey.

The honda uses only 1 chain, so it rides more like a regular dirtbike, but handles like its on rails because of the wider tires.

Do aftermarket fatcats count?
I have one of those missiles. Been looking for one for a few years. Finally got it last fall.

That works in my book! LOL I always like the look of the 250r with the big wheels as a bike. Some people aren't too happy with them though, but I think they are pretty neat. And hey, if that is what you like, then that is what you like. Did you see the crf450 that the guy converted to a big wheel like bike? It's sweet as can be.
