View Full Version : Is THIS what it has come to????
So yesterday I went out to Lost Trails near Pocono Manor, PA. I hadn't ridden a trike in about 20 years, so I wasn't sure what to expect. After taking a bit of getting used to the R, it was like it was yesterday since I had ridden. Anyway, after about 3 and a half hours of riding, one of the park rangers patrolling came up to me as I was taking a rest near my truck. He tells me "I hate to give you the bad news, and since you've ridden all day without incident, it's ok, but you're not allowed to ride those [three-wheelers] in the park, so you can't ride here anymore due to insurance liability reasons." My main question was, "why isn't this posted ANYWHERE??" He had no response. I went to the office for a better explanation, and they gave me the same insurance liability spiel. I asked "if I sign a liability waiver, AND I have my own insurance through GEICO, then what insurance liability are you talking about?" She had no answer. I then asked the same question, "why isn't this on your website?" Her response? "A lot of things aren't on the website." I just started laughing at her and walked out the door, knowing I was fighting a losing battle.
What had been a great day--riding for the first time in forever, finally getting to ride a 250R, getting out in the country, etc--had been completely ruined. I still feel bad about it today as well--as if I did something wrong or illegal. I think it also makes me feel like an idiot for getting a 3-wheeler again--in that, did I just completely waste my money, my time, changed things for no reason (I had to change storage units to a WAY less convenient location to store it). I mean, IS this a problem I'm going to keep encountering?? Has anyone else encountered this? I just hope I'm not going to have to drive 10 hours away to ride this anyplace. And, at what point will they be completely banned, only to ride on private property or to be used as a museum piece?
Anyway, seeing as I know some of you on the board have ridden there in the past, I thought I should let you know about what happened so you don't waste your time going out there. The only upside is they did return my money for the day riding, but I still wasted $12 on a whip flag for the park.

Sheesh! that blows! I think i remeber seeing folks on the boards riding their wheelers there before. didn't they ask what you were riding when you paid for the day?
Paragon was letting us guys in but unfortunaly they closed up shop do to some cargo airport supposivly going in... I'd tell you to come up to hazleton but it seems lately were getting chased from here too!
I feel for ya bud!
Oh, I provided them with everything--make, model, insurance, VIN#. Her excuse was "I didn't know what it was." How can you run an ATV park and not know models. I don't ride quads, but I know the models of those. Even the current ones. Anyway, it sucks.
Dammit!

See if you can find out who their insurance provider is and call them directly. Maybe you could purchase insurance through them instead of Gieko. Everybody wants to make more money.

It's a sad world we are in these days, all about the money.

That's not a bad idea, although I just got the sense that they wanted me out of there. As if riding a 3-wheeler was like pushing heroin or something.

I doubt that. If you can find a way for them to make more money without them being exposed to greater liability, they'd have to be stupid not to cooperate. I'd just call them up, tell them I understand where they're coming from and that I'd like to speak to their insurance carrier to see if some kind of mutually beneficial arrangement could be made. The insurance company gets to sell another policy, the park gets another paying customer and you get to ride.
Make sure you tell the insurance company you already have a policy with a competitor. They love stealing customers.
There's some insurance companies out there that won't touch a trike with a ten foot pole though. If that's the case you're probably just going to be out of luck. I'd keep trying to climb the ladder until I talked to someone with some common sense though. There's got to be a way for all parties involved to get what they want.
Edit: you might want to talk to your carrier about it also. They might have some ideas. They might even have some coverage for the park owner that's better than what they have now. Just be creative and see what you can come up with.

Haha. Man, I used to live in the West and was trying to get one running when I moved out here for a job. When it comes down to it, I like the West better, but I've gotta go where the work is.

That'd be great. The thing is, I've heard other people on the boards here having ridden there without issue. I didn't do a damn thing to warrant getting tossed out, so I'm not sure what that's all about. Oh well, screw 'em. Like I said, if anyone has better places to ride nearby where I'll be allowed, please let me know.

That's rough. My 3 wheeler wasn't dangerous. But, then, one day, it was busted selling heroin at a retirement home. Spent 25 years in prison, and learned all the criminal college tricks at state. Now, the darn thing is just plain deadly. I guess they are right.
Actually, when my fuel tank leaked it was *sorta* dangerous. I taught it a lesson by JB welding it.
I wont be spending a dime at lost trails. And that jersey place says "no wheelies" as they are considered dangerous riding. uhm.... okay??? WDF? I guess I wont ride there either. Otherwise it looked pretty cool.
I'm tired of getting booted from places, too. And the expensive places. And drunk stupid riders leaving their beer cans on the ground and riding like morons. I think I'll do the $400 yearly tower city membership come spring time.

Honestly, I doubt it would work. The park is interested in preventing liability to them, not other riders (your ins probably covers property and the "other" rider). They are looking to prevent themselves from being sued by allowing you to ride that friggin deathtrap. And even though you might sue them, 50 ambulancing chasing lawyers will fight to the death to get you to sign up and sue them anyway. It is reality. So, unless they can be convinced that trikes really aren't as deadly as popular media frames them to be, you likely wont change anyones mind, no matter what ins you carry. After all, your liability waiver is what really is supposed to protect them, but that didn't matter, did it? What gets my goat is all this persecution to trikers, but the rugrats that can barely hold the handle bars are cruising around on banshees without helmets and that's where the deadly injuries happen. That and alcohol on the trails with someone without the maturity to watch the speed.
Then again... I'm drinking and typing. Deadly combo.

Yeah Junk, I remember that kid, He had no place being on that banshee. He was what 10 years old at that, and no helmet or even decent boots, heck anything for that matter.
