Hi there to you all I have searched the forums and can't seem to find an answer to my question I am hoping one of you gurus out there will!:)
i have just purchased a 1984 Honda big red with hi/lo ratio and reverse and she has an "auto" clutch.
I use it for hunting and am having a ball with it (i should have got one years ago i never realized how cool these things are!)
I have just noticed that sometimes after i turn the motor off there is a spinning or whirring noise from the right hand side of the motor i am fairly sure it is the clutch. It will do it for quite a few seconds after shutdown. It doesn't do it very often and may have done it since i got it but today we done some very serious off road miles and some rugged terrain uphill and i noticed it parking the bike on the trailer.
It is not doing it now though.Should i worry about this or is it common? There is no slipping or anything it shifts normally.I can live with a bit of noise if this sometimes happens but i don't want to be stuck 20 miles in a bush range with a blown clutch. Thanks guys I look forward to your advice.Chris:)Just read again your post rule sorry for the new one!

First off, Welcome to the boards!
That is most deffinetly the clutch. I had a 185S for a number of years and it did this ever since I bought it, rode her for about 4 years. Never left me stranded, the only thing that it would do, is when you were going down a hill at idle, it would freewheel (sounds scary eh??), but I just burped the throttle and the clutch would grab. It moved fine, never gave my much problem. I never looked into why it did this, wasent about it. You'll get by with it doing that, but it probably wounldnt be a bad idea to fix it.

I just put a new one way in a 250es and it still has that whurling noise when you shut it down.. its the starter clutch itself that keeps spinning,, thats normal right?... everyone I seen does it

My 200 and 185 did this too, I never found out why, but I never had a problem with either of them.

i thought it was something to do with the starter clutch. my old yami did this every time i switched it off and it never hurt anything. just 20 years of wear and tear i guess.

Ya know, I never really looked into it enough......
Similar to the 250SX which has a one way clutch in the centrifugal clutch mechanism and the starter mechanism, I don't know why there is the one way in the centrifugal clutch?
The starter has one so that it can DRIVE in one direction, turning over your motor and freewheel in the other direction. So that once it is running the starter gears no longer have any drive to them... I have read that a worn starter drive clutch CAN fail and instantly eat up all your starter reduction gears
But now that you got me thinking..... I guess the other one way clutch is so that once your centrifugal weights grab and get you rolling, then it allows the auto motor to still have drive when downshifting so the compression slows you down????? I'm unsure.... I'd have to put my spare motor on my bench and play with it to figure out it's function because I'm just not 100% sure. It may also play a roll in the manual kickstarter drive because the kicker slips when that clutch is wearing out or slipping....
I'm sure Howdy or somebody else can explain that 2nd centrifugal clutches function better than I, I'm just glad that mine still works :)
I'm also not certain how to tell which one is bad based on sounds and symptoms without me taking it apart and feeling it slip physically.

I just noticed this on my 200s tonight. Will a 185 clutch work in the 200s motor?

Your info has been real helpful I will just leave it as is.One thing is for sure,a 3 wheeler makes a quad feel gay!!!! I ride a harley as my road bike but man when it comes to off road what more fun is there than a trike? after riding dirt bikes for many years (2 stroke whizz bangs etc) (which are also awesome) but the 3 wheeler is something else!,I think i will be checking out his forum a lot from now on.!Thanks again for your advice ???:beer

Every trike with electric start Ive owned does it. I think its just the starter clutch 'grabbing' momentarily after shutoff. Never had it happen on a non electric start motor. :wondering
