Looks like a fresh hone and a new piston is all that thing needs. Be sure to get all the crap out of the bottom of the crankcase. Go to a shop and tell them to hone the cylinder, then order a new piston for it in the standard size. Should be easy enough to change it yourself.

How many rings is this piston suppossed to have cause theres no ring on the top groove ?

There should be 2 rings,, one in each groove.

Like I told you, take the piston out and check the rod bearing for play. Report back to me on your findings. If I'm not on MSN, message me anyway and I'll read it when I get online.
Good luck!

You could send your topend to a shop like www.kustom-kraft.com Have it bored, honed, new piston and rings, rod bearings for right around $200 I had mine done.. Or any shop could do the work. Simple, get it fixed already. Enough with all the questions too that take common sense.

Take the $800 - $900 you were going to spend on a TURBO for your 70, post a thread asking if one on the Yamaha engine guru's on this form would kindly, strip and fix & rebuild your engine.
Simply put it in a wooden box and ship - wait,,,,, then re - enstall.
Job done.
Or you could try dismanteling it yourself, posting threads and annoying everyone with stupid questions, like "should a split the crank"?

well james all i can say is make sure there isnt anymore pieces in the bottom end. what i do is fill the bottom end full with oil .all the way till u can see it at the crank. take the plug out and what ever pieces are left should come out. hone the cylinder and get a piston. u should get all new gaskets once they hone the cylinder. congrats on the progress u made so far. this is the time to prep everything. i mean clean it all up.

Those engines are cheap and light. I sold one on ebay and wrapped it in cardboard then threw it in a box. I think I just wrapped tape around the cardboard and used a nice new box and it shipped with no problems. The guy only paid about 75$ shipped, so you may want to look around for a new engine.

with one ring completely gone, i would have a shop check it and make sure the cylinder is round..........it will probably need more than a hone, as ill bet the cylinder walls are SCORED TO HELL.
it shouldnt cost too much to get bored and honed. then just get a piston and rings that match, MAKE SURE THE GAPS ON THE RINGS ARE CORRECT or you will fry your new top end.
you will also need 2 new piston pin clips, they should come in your piston kit, aling with a new wrist pin and wrist pin bearing.
i would also check and make sure the bottom end bearings are tight. the shop will tell you they are shot, even if they are good, knowing that you will have to take them the crank to have a new rod put into it.
but on the other hand, i would rebuild the bottom end as well, since it is apart. that way you wont have to mes with it again for a long time, provided you mix your gas :)

I would consider splitting the cases or having a shop look over the bottom end, I have seen to many 2 strokes break piston skirts and a piece run around the crank and crack the cases

james.... id be willing to rebuild that motor for ya if u want me 2. altho if i was to rebuid that motor u would have to buy the piston or send me the cash to buy it for ya. and send it all to me so i can take it and have it honed. this is just a offer. i can rebuild it perfect for you. all you would have to do is pay for the parts and shipping. im tired of seeing people diss a newb so id be willing to build it for you. if u want me to just say so and i will. i have a buddy that has a 175 in mint shape just needs a pull start. i may have parts that he can hook me up with if nesserary.

I would also offer to rebuild it, but shipping the engine up to me would cost more.

I wasn't going to say anything...
You need to at least dig around the bolock until you find enough ring material to go around the top ring circuit AND until you find enough aluminum to piece back together the piston skirt. If you can not do this, you need to break it down further to make sure you have a clean start.
Otherwise, buy a used engine. It would cost you about the same as rebuilding this one I bet.

Me either, but debris in my transmission would be the least of my concerns if I had case damage... Thats all I was saying...

james if u wanna find parts u gotta have connections. one thing im wondering tho, wtf are you going to do. i mean getting parts is 1 thing, installing them is another. are you gonna do it yourself? or are you gonna have a shop do it? cause whatever way u do this your gonna have to dish out some cash if u want to continue to ride this trike. rebuild it wont be cheap, actually you would be better off buying a used motor that runs if u can find one. i can get 1 but my buddy wont sell me just the motor. he said i can have the whole trike for 300 and all it needs is a pull start. runs and its in mint shape. if u need parts i might be able to help but i make no promisses that im going to get it.

why buy a new motor if this one is rebuildable?
thats the attitude that makes those lil turds parts non-existant.
for gaskets, check a EBAYER called ACJRACING ( he says he can get gaskets for anything .)
Ebay is your friend for parts. as for crank bearings, try ALLBALLS, and for a rod kit, maybe hotrods or something.

Hes already got connections for his gaskets ;)
Btw, the top end is only 3 gaskets, shouldnt be that hard to install.

I am glad to see that all is not lost. James I would search for another engine first. It seems its cheaper to replace those than rebuild. That beinng said, You will know what you have if you rebuild. Send it to a member or a shop and have them take care of it. The bike looks like it is in nice shape so rebuild it and ride.
