No the battery is not necessary.
Change the spark plug for a new one.
I bought a ytm engine and frame a couple years ago and the previous owner had jumped the wire. There was only the coil and cdi on the plugged to the wiring and it had spark.

Im charging the battery now. I have a new plug for my 200X not sure if its the right one, but I stuck it in the plug wire and pulled and still no spark. I checked all the connections sprayed wd 40 into them. what do I need to bypass all the charging stuff? I got a wiring diagram off this site. thanks for all the help. jim

Like Yamada said they don't need the battery to run. Have you tried searching? I remember someone else had a very similar problem but I don't remember how it was fixed.

okay, I unpluged all the connectors except the one from the pickup to the CDI box. hooked up a plug and it sparked right up. So now, im going to hook things back until it quits. I think I can get her to fire up now! Jim
