View Full Version : I'm pulling my FTZ motor out of retirment!

Well, the day has come to retire the motor in my 85R, it's tired and on its last bore. I sent my evil FTZ motor to be fitted for a new piston and finally breath some life into my little discussed "other R". It never gets any love or praise, but has been my daily driver for 10 years. Well, now she is getting cleaned up for the winter racing season....hopefully.... I have been meaning to do this for years, but the old motor kept running and running without any trouble.

I don't know what to say, but this motor was just plain old fast! It ate up fully modified banshees, but was shelved when I went to the 330. We'll see what it can do in my 85R.

The mods for the 85R are K&N, 39PWK, Rad Valve, Wiseco Pro Lite Piston, 19cc head, PT Hi-Rev, well I need a new silencer...It has an FMF Power Core on it now, but I hate it. I can't wait to get it together and see what it does.

Ye, thats a HONDA for ya!

Chris, is the motor a 5 or 6 speed, 85 motor?

6 speed. After riding Chris' in the dunes back one summer around 1999 I made sure to have one for my R before the next winter when we hit the ice.

250rfan is from Scotland so maybe they had a different set up over there.

Hmmmm, now that would be interesting. 5 speed could possibly be more effective for flat track or mx. I really wanna know now.

The 81-84 R had the 5 speed and the later model was a 6 speed.

Ye the early 85's came with a 5 speed gearbox, then i believe Honda changed to a six speed after Yamaha came out with the TRI - Z.

My brother has a 5 speed 85 motor, i raced it for two years, it was a really quick motor, thats why am wondering if ChrisD's is a 5 or 6 speed.

I have talked to Craig from CAL ATV on this issue, and he confimed the early 85 did infact come with a 5 speed gearbox.

Dammit! That's what I thought, but everybody jumped on me about it! I could swear I had a friend when I was about 16 that had an early numbers R from 85 that was a 5 speed. So, I assumed that all 85's were 5 speeds until recently, when people on here told me that all liquid R's were six speeds. I'm sure some of you remember this as it was only 2 months ago.

Well if you want, call Craig at CAL ATV, he'll tell you the story. :D

I didn't know that, some 85's were 5 speed motors. I had one, it was a 6 speed, my friend's(now mine) is a 6 speed and I have a crate motor, I never checked that one. Any idea of what engine numbers were 5 speed?

I will call him for sure tomorrow. And as for you naysayers "you know who you are" that was wrong of you to mislead others. Once again, I can't stress how important it is to have verifiable information before you retort.

I've never heard of a 5spd water cooled 250R motor? Not saying they arent out there but I've never heard of one.

actually he is right, that was the biggest factor between the 85 & 86 250r's, I was pretty sure they were 5 speed's in 85 and then 6 speed's in 86

They made 6 speeds in 85 also, only the very early 85's came in a 5 speed.

We do some impromptu ice racing on Greenwood Lake, NY.

As for the 5/6 speed thing. My '85 330R had an 11/84 build date and was a 6 speed. My other '85 R is also a 6 speed but I'd have go and check the build date on it.
