If I'm understanding you correctly this is the part where you get your impact out and zip the nut right off. Jamming things into the gears doesn't sound like the best thing for the gears.

The way I have done a 200x and 350x clutch is put a screw driver in the rear sprocket against the swingarm and break it loose. Same with torqueing it. Doesn't seem to hurt anything.

As John said - a penny in the gears works - but use it with an impact gun - makes it really easy - double check - but I am 99% sure it is left handed threads for that nut - FYI.........
The soft copper penny will not damage any of the gears.

I wouldnt worry about the penny messing up the gears, Id be worried about jamming something in there and causing extra stress on the bearings / shaft. But with an impact, it might not be to bad. Ive always been able to get them off by just holding the basket with my hand and a good impact. Ive also learned not to put screwdrivers between the spring posts on the pressure plate. Thats never good news.
EDIT: i know your on a 85, but 86-87 is not left hand threads. Also, My manual shows a tool from Honda which is plate with 4 holes which bolts to the spring mounts, a hole threw the center for a socket, and about a 12-18" handle welded on. That shouldn't be to hard to make and would in my opinion be the "right" way to do it.
