I have an 85' 350X that the compression release isnt working on. I notice that the cable doesnt move when the bike is kicked over. Where should I start to address fixing the problem? Is there something inside the case that the kick start shaft acctuates the cable somehow thus opening the valves a bit? Ive never been inside one of these and want to do some homework before I create a mess trying to fix the problem.

Sounds like the cable itself to me. Pull it off and check that first.

if its anything like a 86/87 200x, there is a tab inside the clutch cover, next to the kick starter. Mine stopped working and I found the tab broken.

I got one new one and one mint one on EBAY this year, LUCKY ME!!!!!!

If you look at the arm on the clutch cover it should move near the top of the kicker stroke. Behind the case is a cam with a punch mark on it that must be lined up to a mark on the shaft or it doesn't work at all or at the wrong time.

I have found 3 to be in the wrong place in the last dozen or so machines.
