hey
I'm new to the forum and i would just like to ask a few qestions about this trike.

a freind has told me hes had a 185 sitting in his yard for years and that i could have it for $100. when i went to check it out it was in pretty rough shape but i have these questions that if anyone could answer, would be great:)

-on the gas tank, it said ATC185, NOT 185s, it was also rigid, can anyone tell me the year it was made in? 1980? he said its a 86 but i know 185s were't made that late.

-the tires were flat, would i just be able to put tubes into them instead of getting new one? (i dont have lots of money, im only 15)

- he said it had compression when it was running last and that it ran like a champ, but when i pulled the pullcord, it wouldnt turn over the engine, like the pawl didnt grip the flywheel or somthing, put recoiled very smoothy. does anyone know what could have caused this?

-the gas tank had rust in it, not very severe but still. how would i be able to get rid of this.

-he said his parents have had it since before he was born, but he cant find the ownership. so if this is correct, it would be registered under there name....so would i be able to bring the VIN number in somewere, along with a note " i sold my atc185 to.....for this much money..." signed by the owner and make new ownership papers under my name?

-can i insure a trike? and if so, around what price can i be expecting per year?

- do you think this is a good deal, and should i go for it?

thank you very much for any responses. AND THANKS FOR THE HELP:D :TrikesOwn

and sorry if my questions are dumb:p

ok first off the tires if they are not dry rotted then yes you should be able to get tubes. when you say it didnt turn like the engine is stuck or the recoil isnt grabbing?, the gas tank you can buy some liquid to clean it i believe, bleach i heard? not to sure, you shouldnt need the papers if you just want to ride it unless you want to register it, tell him to write a bill of sale. i think its a good deal, do a tear down on it, paint, some new parts here and there and youll have a nice trike. tim

also what would be some easy ways to gan a bit of performance? mill down head, bigger bore exaust, porting, hi-comp. piston? anything of that sort? are there any tricks to making these engines have a bit more grunt, (or even a monster:twisted: lol)

if i got a xr200 cylinder head asembly, would i be able to bolt it up to the 185?
(4 valves vs. 2 valves?) just an idea haha

um the head from an xr wont fit i think, performance wise there pretty fast trikes, boring some what of performance, new exhaust, gearing it, well the pull start teeth that grab the fly wheel may have broke take it off and look at it maybe a pic if you can.

9 inch rims or 8 inch rims?? Quickest way to ID the older 200 or 185 monsters. 8inch rims are S models and the 9 inch is the rest of the pack (STD, M, E, ES).

Tires are cheap, a tube runs easily $15 and if your going tube you might as well get one with tire slime in it already for $20. But if the rims are in descent shape and you clean the bead surface up really well, a cheap 2 ply is all of $30.

Get it to run, get some good 2 ply tires so you have some suspension, and then if you need some more oumph and it doesnt smoke, buy a smaller front sprocket. Front sprocket is all of $20, beefed up engine is easily a few hundred in parts...
