Thinking of cheap easy ways to make my 200x a little more unique and different looking then the rest in the crowd and I was thinking about taking the shock boots off. Its got black ones on it now and black shock bodies that are going to get stripped back to the aluminum and lightly polished and a 250r fender added. I think it will look good but I'm here and its there and I'm having a hard time getting a good mental pic of it. Does anyone have pics with no shock boots?

I'm sure someone does, and they probably have a picture of the leaking oil seals from rocks hitting the chrome tubes too......
You can do whatever you wish, but those covers give the tubes some sort of protection from the roost of the machine in front of you.
Cheap? Cut the front end off and ride wheelies everywhere, now thats UNIQUE!!
Dammit!

I never used fork boots on mine since it didnt come with them. But I got a whole new front end after my forks seized and kept them on. I like the looks of it with them but in my sig. theres a bad quality shot of it last winter without them.

I don't know if it's the rear wheel/tire combo, or the all black plastics, but I gotta say, I love the look of that R.

If I'm not mistaken don't the shock tubes still have a small dust seal to prevent crap from getting in around the actual seal itself? I think I like how it looks without the boots. Gives it more of a sleek performance look. I don't ride it much but when I do it will either be down the almost dried up river during the summer or at the Little Sahara sand dunes. Never thought about pitting though.

The dust protectors scrape most or all of the dirt off before it ever gets to the actual seals.

Coooooorect, but the dings in the upper legs take there toll. Matter o fact, my buddies 85 200X that rides behind the 3fiddy X O-MINE now has a broken headlight and a bad ding in his right upper fork tube. :w00t:
I WARNED HIM

thanx man! I miss that old look, it will soon be on my new one though the 500!

Old red, the correct term for the front "shocks" is forks, the shock is in the back.
Your not the only one I saw referring to them as shocks :D
Do you still have the stock steering stem ball bearings in yours instead of the after market caged roller bearing kit you can buy ?
If not, I have this whole 83-85 200X trip assembly with them (brand new) on for 50 bucks, the caged bearing kit was 36 bucks alone, interested at all ?

I call them either one. Now I know.
I'm sure its still got the stock bearing setup but then again I'm not completely sure. Is there something I should know about this and why I would need to upgrade it? I don't know that I've ever had an issue with the stock bearing setup other then on my XR 80 when it had a little up and down slack in it and all I had to do was tighten the nut some more.
