I rode it for about 60 miles, my 650L is a much more comfortable road machine for sure, that has a much higher coolness factor for sure but for all practical purposes, in my area anyway, the L is a better machine for my use.
To my surprise, the power between the R & L isn't all that much different either, the R just has a bit more everywhere but the powerbands seem darn close to identical.
Scrawny & OS.........spread the word, it's for sale, for sure.
Comes with dual sport wheels and tires too, that's the configuration I drove it in, not the motard set up.

I might as well say they are two completely different bikes.
The R is water cooled, kick start only and not street legal from factory and was made soley for baha and long distance races, it is a very specialized bike.
R also has aluminum frame and shares hardly any parts with the L model at all.
R first came to be in 2000 and 07 was it's last year.
L model has been around since 1993 and is still made and is basically the same bike since 93 !
L is pretty much the old air cooled 600R (50 more cc's though) with street legal stuff on and polution junk on.
They are both great bikes and Honda still sells every L made, even though it's a 15 year old design!
Mines a 94 L , which in my eyes, looks better then the "new" red ones (99-present).

Those round dots you see at upper L of "dash", I think that is the tac.

I just bought an '83 XR500. Havn't had a chance to ride it yet. What can I expect out of this bike? I have a thread started on here with pics if you wanna look at it.

I saw that, that looks TERRIBLE on them now + it has a chrome gas cap now, big whoop  , they need to wake those bikes up man, Honda really cheapened them up graphic wise, that's the least they could do man, change the color and put some larger graphics back on.
Here is my buddies bike on ebay now
