ok i posted that i was gonna find a 350x earlier but ive decided i want to restore my old big red first. my dad has it and uses it strictly for work but he wants to get him a 4-wheeler. so i might get it back. its in rough shape but runs and rides great. mechanically its fine, but it aint too good on looks. lol i replaced the whole front end a while back before i gave it to my dad, the forks were bent badly so i found a complete front end that was completely rebuilt with new barrings, brakes and everything. anyways i want to make it look new, but meaner. but i want performance. what kind of engine and rear end mods can i do, if any? what other engines are direct bolt ins? i was thinking that it looks like a 300 from a 2wd honda 4-wheeler would bolt right in. will it? also this might sound weird but is it possible to put a lift or anything on this atc? i think it would look cool if it sat a few inches higher. btw if it helps any i mainly use it for off road use but i want it to be beefy.
thanks for any and all help guys!!! and sorry about all he questions.
John
P.S.
all the older honda 250 and 300 engines ive heard have that rattling or tapping sound in the engine, like a loose timing chain or something??? what is this and can i make it go away? or is it just how they sound?

if i remember right that was the cam chain tensioners, anyone feel free to correct me on that. also, if you search, I believe another member was doing the swap with the 300 honda.

My Br is the same. We've got a Yamaha 225 moto4 which rattled. It needed a rebore anyway so replaced the plastic timimg chain tentioner in the process. Stopped it rattling, so if the Honda is a similar design, that could well be the answer.

yea- the 250SX and 250ES were very similar in nature. I think the engines were practically the same. You can get performance parts for the 250SX like powroll or whatnot. Make sure you use the same year when crossing parts. I think the 85 engines are the same and the 86s are etc...
My guess is that you can swap a 350X top end over with no mods. I have yet to look into it - so I dunno.
I like the battery in the trunk. Do you need a battery box? I have a decent one.

The 300trx engine will basically bolt in (search for "300sx, old thread from a guy across the pond who did it). I believe the SX/BR output shaft had to be put into the 300 engine.
Rally - did you mean a trx300 top end? The 350x wont be even close. Also swapping cylinders with a 300trx wont gain you anything, same bore but the trx has a different stroke

same what wheeliepop said. same bore but different strokes. the only way it would work is with a special stroker piston or some other mod like that.

Whats the preload in the rear set at?? Turn it all the way up and you'll gain a good 1" of height if its still at the bottom setting. The front you'd have to open up the fork tubes and put in some spacers to increase the preload to keep it at full height with a rider while static.
TRX300 should fit but will have to change the output shaft in the motor.
Bigger Meats. 27x12's fit in the rear, and will msot likely fit the front (Havent tried Yet).
