View Full Version : 350X rebuilder out there?
Hi everyone. I owned an 86 350X about 13 years ago and have now decided I need another one. I am a project kind of guy so I bought an 85 off Ebay yesterday and picked it up today. It is maybe a little worse off than I would like to start with and I maybe paid a little too much, $700; but too late to worry about that. The engine (an 86) may have some issues as it has the right cover off, clutch is inop and I think some clutch and/or kicker parts are missing. Another issue is the bolthole for the clutch cable bracket is stripped and when I turn it over slowly there is air blowing out of that bolthole! Is this a bad sign or what? I am thinking the best solution is to find someone who rebuilds the engines and will take mine as exchange and send me one ready to go. Anyone know of a such a place?
This may be a long road for me and I would appreciate all the input I can get!

The guy in the very first ad sounds like what you're looking for! :-D
Hope this helps.

That ad sounds like who I am looking for. Too bad I didnt see the ad below it a couple days ago. I should have driven to Michigan and paid $1,500 for that one! That darn Ebay gets me excited and I overbid sometimes!!!
Thanks!

that sounds like a great motor, but a little pricey for me. I want to keep the whole project at $2000 and I already have 700 in it.

buy a service manual
to see if you have all the stuff and see what you need.
as for the bolt hole just retap it (metric).the air is because it(the bolt hole) is directly in the crank case and must go into it.i have seen some sites that do engine exchanges. but i don't remember where they are...i will search again for them and see what i find...

absolutely!!!!! get a manual!!!!!!
you'll be kickin yourself in the arse when ya start wonderin if you just forked out a bunch of cash just to trade your engine that may have only needed a new clutch for one that may be gettin close to needin a clutch.
calm down bud, i think you're reading to much into things, the fellas above are correct, the bolt likely goes all the way into the crankcase and that's why you're gettin some blow by out of the hole.
i was watchin that trike and if i was closer i would have been biddin against ya. get your manual, find out what you're missin, slap a new clutch in and see what ya got.
good luck,
steve
I am feeling better already knowing I can get some advice from yall. I guess I will get a manual and see where I am before considering a new motor. How can I tap that bolthole? It doesnt seem like there is much room to drill and tap it bigger.
A guy on another thread in classifieds said he was trying to sell a running 350x for 7-800 but couldn't. I wish he lived close to me. The whole reason I bought that one was because I had been unable to find a better one close enough to go pick up.
I emailed the guy from the cycletrader ad above at Brenny's Cycles in Iowa to see what he wanted for exchange. Anyone ever deal with him?

All right. First step, Honda manual is ordered.
I figured out that there is a large chunk gone from the left side cover where the chain broke it out. I see there are two "walls" and it broke the first one and not the second one so no oil is leaking. What does everyone think of this? Do a lot of guys run engines with this area damaged?
I also pulled the valve cover and there is significant wear in the cam journals and a groove in the cam surface itself. No bearings in this setup are there? What is the availability of heads and valve covers? Any suggestions?
The Brenney's guy in Iowa wanted $995 to completely tear down and inspect, bore and replace piston/rings and repair all the threads. He included cam gear, chain and tensioners and some other common replacables. I am guessing the head and rocker cover would increase price.
What are yall's thoughts about all this?

Left side covers are common. The damage depends on the use of a case saver and the impact of the chain. The 350X spare I have, had a case saver and the chain took out the mount as well as slight case damage.
$995.00 sounds like a lot! Good luck on the head as they are hard to come by. I think I found a source with 1 or 2 new ones for $425.00 each. This is the head with no internals!!!!
I just redid my 350X as it needed a bore, cam, valves, cam chain, rockers, cam chain guides, and gaskets kit. Cost was around $625.00 in parts.
Good luck!

yes that area in front of the sprocket is a common broken area you will have to resurface the cover and case to assure no oil leakage but as long as the damage is limited to the "dead" chamber your ok.
heads are no longer avalible last i knew and if you buy used your risking it. the best solution is Megacycle they will machine it for a bearing cam and supply you with a bearing cam for cheaper then a new head.
is he doing a valve job as well? for 995.00 i hope so
I started a new thread called "JayP 350x project". I need help on the swingarm, rear carrier and steering tem.
no manual yet!

ATCs Reborn: calm down bud, i think you're reading to much into things
Turns out I was correct to be a little PO'd based on my first instinct. You can see my new thread and this thing had a lot of problems from transmission gears to crankshaft balancer. Be happy you didn't buy it! That is why I am in search of a new engine...

well, sorry to hear that bud.
as far as what i said above, wasn't tryin to be rude bud, was just tryin to help out, unfortunately it didn't go that way this time. was just speakin from personal experience as there's been several times somethin went wrong and i expected the worst only to find the prob to be a simple/cheap fix.
i wish ya luck, don't give up, as you know the x is a helluva machine and it'll be worth the extra work and funds.
peace,
steve

I wasn't saying you were rude or anything, heck I can take that! I was just updating you on the machine you could of purchased. I didn't think know if you were reading my new thread, it has some pics of the problems. I am going ahead with the rebuild of the rolling chassy and will try and find or fix engine parts along the way.
