I have been looking for a muffler for a 1983 ATC 110 as the original is rusted out (when I got it running and revved it up fiberglass blew all over the place  ).
The prices on after market mufflers is amazingly high in my uninformed opinion and I got to thinking-
Is it possible to weld up some pipe and make your own exhaust/muffler system? What would be involved in doing that?

I'm sure if you got creative with a piece of electrical metal tubing - EMT - that you could make something up. Stuff is cheap and H Depot has it in lots of diameters. Id' make maybe a piece of 3/4 for the inside with a bunch of holes in it and a 2.5" outside piece packed. I'm sure you could even make it rebuildable....

That is exactly what I was thinking. Something like this-

umm.... just a suggestion, have no idea if it will work or not, but if you still have the exhaust pipe and just the muffler part is rusted out, maybe you can weld on a $6 lawn tractor muffler tip onto it?? i was going to use a B&G 10-15 hp one on mine since it was threaded, but the threaded end was just a tad too big to fit inside my pipe. If you have welding skills or have a pipe expander, you could just thread one of those on - they're at home depot, they are about.... 8 inches long and maybe 2 1/2 inches diameter?? just a suggestion - if it's a bad one, don't yell at me!!!! here's a picture of my old one - instead of ramming a pipe in, you could maybe thread or weld on a lawn tractor muffler or something. That stock pipe is pretty solid, it should work... again, if i'm wrong, don't be too harsh!

That's a pretty good idea. I'll look into that today.

I bought a brand new 110 cobra exhaust from a honda dealer for $50.00 brand new. Sometimes they just want to get rid off the stuff.

Cut the bottom out of one of those small propane tanks, and weld it to your headpipe, then weld a pipe inside the tank and put holes in it.... it works pretty good if you spend some time with it.... sounds good too...

I have found references of several people using tractor mufflers.

So it is possible to weld EMT? http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=72713-000001792-72713&lpage=none
It has a galvanized coating. Does that matter?

Galvy doesn't matter and your gonna paint it anyhow. It will burn off, better to wire wheel it off first. Just don't breath in the fumes. You'll have a hard time arc welding it, either gas weld, braise or mig weld it due to the thinness of the tubing....
