Ever since seeing this pic on 3wheelerworld.com, I've been wondering what is the deal with the gas tank decal on this Tecate.

The photo looks like an old one, and the trike new, so I wonder if those were pre-production stickers that inevitably got put on or what. Does anyone know the story? In any event, I dig 'em and am thinking about having Harlan make up some for my resto.

looks like an stock 85 tank decal with a very shiney and glary tank making it look like its 2 tone, but the decal looks to be on an 84 t3... hmmm. i know the 84 version had the black and white stripe, and the 85 was just the name kawasaki, like on that tank.

Right. So this is sort of a hybrid, in a way. I think I kinda like it a little more than the regular '84 decal.

Ah, so those must be prototype stickers. Man. I hope I can get those made.

Well, I do believe that I will be purchasing a set of new OEM stickers from Tecate Kid next week, which I'm going to send to Harlan for duplication. So he'll have the exact colors, patterns and size. Then we'll have a good reliable source to get almost exact 1984 Tecate stickers. If anyone you know has the '85 stickers, let me know and we can get Harlan to copy those as well. Thanks for the offer though.

I believe we'll be getting the "regular" tank decal.

It seems as though kawasaki had two styles of original tank decals for the 84 Tecate. Johns is the one style that seems to be a bit more common. T-3 lopes has this design on his 84 tank. I have a tank where you can clearly see the outline, which is the 84 style. but it is the other design. Like the one in the factory picture above. They are larger and have a hickey stick like white stripe that extends under the bottom. Where the other doesn't. The early design, and maybe the latter seem to have come in both white/black and white/ blue. I need the hockey stick style in white/blue. They are larger than the two vertical stripe design as well.

Wait, you mean John's are actually a replica of OEM Tecate decals? I had no idea. Now what he's talking about make sense re: sending his to Harlan.

Personally, (at least in ads, magazine article, etc.) I've only ever seen the black and white in the hockey stick stripe style.

So essentially you're saying these combos actually came on Tecate's from the factory:

1) Hockey stick style--black and white
2) Hockey stick style--blue and white
3) John's style--black and white
4) John's style--blue and white

and what started this thread...
5) prototype--all white blocks with black and white Kawasaki

Do you have any idea how this happened? Did early models have the hockey stick style and the later 84 models have John's version? Which one's got blue vs. black? It seems strange to me that they would have used blue on any '84 models, as there was nothing blue on them. The seat was black. My red '84 came with hockey-style black and white.

Maybe Kawasaki just slapped whatever stickers they had available at the time on here.

Sorry to not have known yours were OEM style, John. I'd just never seen that style, let alone blue & white.

OK, I'll contact you when I'm able to get the set from Tecate Kid and we can send them in together.
