so my chain keeps clunking againt the guard, so i fixed that, and was driving in and out my laneway slowly, trying to listen if it was still rubbing, when this cop pulls in. I wasnt wearing my helmet, but i wasn't going fast or on the road. He told me to get my helmet, so i got it, then he said if he sees me again he'll charge me! WTF, i was on my own property. I didn;t want to argue with weather or not he could charge me, but i was pretty sure he can't. So i just got my helmet, then he's like, show me that you know how to wear it...WTF, who doesn't know how to wear a helmet! So i shoved it on my head, then he said blah blah blah and took off.
Could he have charged me for being on my own property? I live in ontario canada, but even in the states, could he have charged you?

not here...you could be driving like a *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**E dited* on your own property without a helmet, and as long as you aren't disturbing anyone he can't say jack.

i think he was just in a crappy mood. i just can't respect any of the local cops...they do nothing, state trooper or cops in the city, i understand, but these guys do NOTHING. as a result, i feel no remorse in filing complaints with the local sheriff.

not here. i ride slow sometimes in my yard without my helmet. ooo by the way i live on main street aka rt 39. its a state road that has heavy traffic including police. they have never said a word other than "stay in your own yard and no riding after 10 pm and before 8 am" so i listen to em. i dont need my ride impounded.

Dammit!

ya, but there was no reasoning with this guy, i told him i was going slow to test out some repairs i made, he pretty much ignored what i said and was like "do you have a helmet, show me". It was such bad timing, i live on one of the least driven roads, hardly ever even seen a cop on my road, i hopped on my 200 and it wasnt even 5 minutes he was pulling in my driveway. I don't think it would have helped if i argued being on my own property, i have the ownership but havent changed it over, so he might even be able to claim it as stolen.
Im past the angry stage now, i realize he's was probably in a bad mood and trying to save me from injury, but now im paranoid of driving it without a helmet even for a short time, i dont want my wheels taken!

I guess I'll sound old but...

It's so much better to just suk it up and say "ok, I'm sorry about that, I was listening for a noise" thank him and carry on.

Being polite, even when your right, goes a long way with police. They deal with crap and problems all day long. And if your even on the road he may let you slide, but if you run, he'll be sure to be watching for you!

Occasional when I have 6 machines out on MY TRACK in MY YARD the police will stop by and I'll just shut it down for awhile. It stinks, but if I put up a fight they'll all be on my arse. Believe it or not, there are laws and or ordinances against raising the grade on your land such as building jumps. I don't want to push it and lose my track.......

I agree! A few of us here go out and street race a bit. It is a well known back road that people have been racing since they could race them. Sometimes the cops do come, tell us they had too because the old lady on the farm a few miles away called them. Anyways, I am always polite, never ever run, always tell the truth if I am asked and I have never been given any grief. Half the time people see them coming (you can see 5 miles in every direction maybe 10) and run to their cars and take off. I always walk and never leave, most of the time they drive right by. A couple times they have even come back and BS'd with me, telling me better places to go.

Exactly, that's an image you can never get out of your memory too, no matter how hard you try. Like a few others said, it's best just to take the advice and semi-taunting in stride. If you piss them off, then they'll just look for you. If somebody had told me that when I was a teen I think I'd have a shorter record now, then again, I prolly wouldn't have listened.

Yea I agree....comin from a relative of a few cops...my dad is a former Causeway police officer and he always tells me to wear my helmet.....and then he reminds me of his first fatality on the bridge......a guy and his gf got in a fight on the Northshore and the guy sped off....paid his toll wasnt wearin his helmet...hit speeds of around 160...front tire blew....and you can imagine the rest...got the call cause someone thought they hit part of the bike...ended up bein the guys head....I know there is a reall difference between 2 wheels and 3 but its just the idea....better safe than sorry thats my philisophy....but to answer *Edited**Edited* ques...he cant do *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited*....just like if you get in an accident in a private parking lot they cant give you a ticket....at least in Louisiana...

well, here in Ohio, i got pulled over for doing donuts in the local parking lot for a closed up grocery store....called wreckless operation on private property.......So that means he could give me a ticket for doing donuts in my yard WTF?!?!?!?!? i would tell him to BLOW ME!

Ive never had a problem with a cop. even after pulling a wheelee past the RCMP with no helmet. I had no plate so they dident bother because i could easily take off into a feild and they would never see me again

Also the law is a little strange over here with private land,
Any road, car park or field that was private up until 4 years ago you could do what you liked on it and nobody could say a thing unless it was noise levels ect affecting others, But now if its a private road or car park that has acsess from the public highway is classed as a public highway so the police have the same powers to prosecute UNLESS it is closed of by a gate or barrier stoping normal members of public getting onto it

id tell him to kiss my ass, then drive off without a helmet, lose him in a mud pit if he dares to follow, call the sheriff and charge him with tresspassing.

If you were on your own property, it's interesting he took it upon himself to come on to your private property. Usually it takes the land owner to call and complain, a warrant, or probable cause. Probably a good thing you didn't make an issue of it. Things could have really gone down hill from there. They generally don't like not being taken seriously.

the cops cant do anything here...they ride by and see me with out a helmet or riding like an ass all the time and have never stoped...i have had them here for noise one or twice in the last ten years...but yeah they pretty much leave me alone

Ive been chased a few times myself. I got away a few times but got caught twice and now only ride road when I have to. First time was on the old 110 when a cop was right behind me and I pulled off into the trail and shut it off and he came up to me and that resulted in a $100.00 fine. Second time was when I got stranded in a swamp area and had to ride in the middle of the rail road tracks 7 miles into town then 15 miles back. Blew out a tire, rode down the shoulder of the road for 2 seconds and stopped, nowhere to run and no way to do it. Just a warning and the guy actually knew some stuff about trikes. They never actually bother me riding on my own property, even when one watched me ride up the road to the trail. That cop must have been real power hungry like stated above.

At the risk of sounding old....

Just be nice and dont make yourself look like a jack@$$, especially if your out riding,, if you do it makes the rest of us look bad. If you are on your own land, they cant do anything about it (except noise levels in some places), but if you are on a place like a gas station, etc, then you are allowed to do donuts and wheelies, etc as long as you have permission from the owner. We can screw around in the school parking lot now because we got permission from the principal. The reason being is if you dont, and you get hurt messing around, then they are liable to get sued.

Ive been pulled over so many times its almost pathetic, but NOT ONCE have I ever gotten a ticket, just be nice and play along and 99% of the time you can leave with a warning at most.

I got pulled over on a diferent school parking lot once for pulling broadies with my 250ES one night. The cop came up and just told me to "do those kind of things where people cant see you, so they dont complain and make me drag my ass down here to talk to you guys" and he also gave us permission to ride on the side of the road as long as we didnt screw around. Being nice to the cops goes a long way around here. Yeah, it pisses me off as much as the next guy that I got pulled over, but really, where will acting like a jerk off get you?

Next time you get stopped, try telling a cop to 'blow me' or 'suck it', and watch how fast he writes that ticket, with every little detail thing written down that you are doing wrong!!! In some cases they are even allowed to impound your ATV, so if you dont like what they pulled you over for, ask for his badge #, his car #, and the time he pulled you over, and go down to the station to report it. Thats the best thing you can do.
